Slow computers in today’s world can be extremely frustrating to use. The amount of time they use to respond or to perform a task can prove to be over whelming. Slow computers can be the result of the programs you have installed or even viruses which are running in the background, both of which can lead to less storage. Usually, when people come across this problem they think that the only way to solve their slow computer issues is by getting a new computer. That might be the answer sometimes, but most of the time it’s not. And before making such a costly decision, it’s important that you follow the following steps and see if your computer’s speed increases.
1. Uninstall Unused Programs
Whenever we buy a new computer, we hardly ever look at the existing programs that come with the computer but will probably never be used. Some of these programs automatically run in the background but can be changed in the settings. In order to view and change or remove the programs you do not need, go to the control program and select the program and click uninstall. Remember that some programs need to be present for your computer to function properly. If you’re unsure about which programs to get rid of, use a program called PC Decrapifier. It’ll filter out the programs for you.
2) Delete Temporary Files
These files can stay on your computer and can decrease its performance. When you get rid of these temporary files and things such as your browsing history and cookies, you make space on your computer which increases its speed. In order to perform this task, go to My Computer, click on your C drive and select the windows option and then view your temporary files. You can select them all and get rid of them. Once you’ve deleted them, be sure to empty your recycle bin as well.
3) Get More Storage
We’ve already stated that not having enough or having full storage can immensely slow down your computer’s performance. One way to rectify this is by getting a new hard drive for your computer to increase your storage, or you can empty the storage you already have by deleting large files that you have saved, such as movies and software.
4) Install a Solid State Drive
Even though hard drives are not cheap, installing a good one with great speed can change your overall user experience. It is worth the investment.
5) Prevent Unnecessary Startups
Some programs start by themselves when you start the computer, and they’ll run in the background. In order to prevent these programs from automatically running you need to first click on start and then run. Type ‘ms config’ in run. Now you’ll be able to view a list of programs that start running when you turn on the computer. You can choose the program and alter its settings from here. You also have the option to disable all of these programs and then manually turn them on when need be. Another hack is to remove the many fonts that Windows loads when starting up. You can hide the fonts from by going to that folder.
6) More RAM
RAM stands for random access memory. This is the temporary memory that your system uses. Having more RAM allows users to download and install more programs without slowing the computer down. Having less ram and more programs can freeze your computer. You can increase your RAM by getting more memory. If you do not know which programs are using up the most space, you can visit the task manager on your computer.
7) Run a Disk Defragment
This may sound hard but it is not. It allows you to defragment your disk and allows your system to detect unnecessary programs and uninstall them and wipe them off the drive. In order to do this, go to My Computer, then hard drive properties, and from the toolstab click on the defragment now option.
8) Clean Your Disk
Every computer has an option to ‘run disk clean up.’ This program searches your computer for files which aren’t needed and automatically gets rid of them. The method of cleaning your disk is as follows:
Start, programs, accessories, system tools, disk cleanup.
9) Give Your Computer a Static IP
Giving your system a static IP address can manage a lot of problems. When your computer starts, it spends a lot of time asking the network for an IP address. You can save this effort by giving it a static IP address. A static IP address is one that never changes. In order to give your computer a static IP address perform the following functions: go to the network and sharing center. From there go to change adapter settings, then to properties and select ‘Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).’ Now go to its properties and under ‘use the following IP address,’ enter the details such as the correct IP, Subnet Mask, and Default gateway. If you do not know all these details, then go to start and run and type cmd. When the command prompt appears, type “IPCONFIG/All” and your process will be complete.
10) Getting Rid of the Dust
As we all know, gadgets need to be kept clean because dust can ruin them. Dust collects over time and blocks the airflow to your gadget causing them to heat up, which in turn can cause fan issues and can slow down the performance of your system. When your fan starts making noises when video calling or watching a movie, this can become very troublesome because it will become impossible to ignore the whirring of the fans trying to keep the temperature down. If you own a desktop or a laptop, you can separate its exterior and with a vacuum or cloth you can clean out the dust. You have to make sure that your computer has been turned off for about thirty minutes before your perform this task to suction the dust-out.
Remember, your computer’s life depends on how you treat it. If you perform all the above-mentioned tips, then you’ll be able to better care for it and increase its life and enhance its performance.
