‘1899’ Series Canceled: Netflix Cancels Show After One Season

To everyone’s disappointment, Netflix’s 1899 had to bid farewell after a successful season.

On Monday, Showrunners Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese took to Instagram with a joint statement announcing their saddening news. They said, “With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a second and third season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned. That’s life.”

The statement went on to continue, “We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget.”

On November 17, 2022, Netflix premiered the 8-episode series ‘1899’ that chronicled the journey of a migrant steamship journeying west. However, when they stumble across another vessel, the Prometheus, drifting in open water, what follows is a chilling and unforgettable voyage filled with unexpected events.

This multilingual series boasted an esteemed international cast, comprising of Aneurin Barnard, Emily Beecham, Miguel Bernardeau, Andreas Pietschmann, Maciej Musial, Rosalie Craig, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Clara Rosager, Yann Gael, Maria Erwolter, Mathilde Ollivier, Isabella Wei, José Pimentão, Gabby Wong, Fflyn Edwards, Jonas Bloquet, Anton Lesser, and  Alexandre Willaume among others.

In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Adar and Friese hinted that their minds were already brainstorming for season two and three of 1899.

Following the success of Adar and Friese’s Dark series, which ran for three seasons, Netflix signed an exclusive multi-year contract with them in 2018. This was the first European overall deal that Netflix had ever made. With this new agreement came 1899, their initial show under its provisions. which has since become a great hit.
