5 Quick Fixes if Your Face ID Isn’t Working

1. Restart Your Device & reboot Face ID

If you’re struggling to use a software program, sometimes the issue can be fixed by restarting your device. To do this, turn the device off and wait for one or two minutes before turning it back on again. In some cases, this may as well resolve the issue.

2. Ensure Your Face ID is Turned On

If your Face ID isn’t working, don’t panic! The cause might be that Face ID was never enabled or recently disabled for the app or feature you’re trying to unlock. Fortunately, checking is quick and easy, and only takes a few seconds.

  1. Open Settings and tap on ID & Passcode
  2. If prompted, provide your unique passcode

The TrueDepth camera system, which is used for Face ID recognition, employs an infrared camera and dot projector. The latter projects thousands of tiny dots of infrared light onto your face to be detected by the former. 

To use Face ID, you must have an unobstructed view of your entire face. Make sure that the area around the camera is clean and free from any obstructions like a case or fingerprints. If you’re holding your iPad in landscape mode, double-check that your hand or anything else is not covering the camera. 

4. Go for an Alternate/Secondary Appearance

Face ID is designed to gradually adapt as your appearance changes; however, if you change your appearance drastically (e.g., new hairstyle or glasses), you might need to update your Face ID with an alternate appearance.

  1. Go to Settings & select Face ID & Passcode
  2. If prompted, provide your unique passcode
  3. Select ‘Set Up an Alternate Appearance’
  4. Follow instructions and help the Face ID feature learn & save your secondary/alternative appearance

If you’re worried about tweezers, makeup, hoaxes, or shaving accidents making Face ID useless, don’t be. It’s been refined enough that those things shouldn’t affect it. However, there are some other factors to be noted:

  • Many people are aware that Face ID will not work when wearing a mask; however, some solutions do exist for those individuals. In order for Face ID to unlock your device, it must see your entire face, this includes eyes, nose and mouth.
  • If you’re having difficulty using Face ID while wearing glasses, try taking them off and scanning your face again. In most cases, Face ID will work whether or not you have glasses on; however, some types of sunglasses can block the function.
  • You can now use your Face ID to unlock your iPhone, even if you normally wear a mask that blocks it, as long as you have an Apple Watch.

How to Set Up Face ID?

In order for your Face ID to function properly, you need to:

  1. Open Settings and tap on ID & Passcode
  2. If prompted, provide your unique passcode
  3. Select ‘Set Up Face ID’
  4. Hold your iPhone/iPad and position your face right in front of your device
  5. Select ‘Get Started’
  6. Position your face properly inside the frame & move your head to finish the circle
  7. Select Continue after the initial Face ID scan
  8. Move your head similarly for another time
  9. Select Done
