Here's How Your Business Can Protect The Environment

The world is in a mess! We don’t need to tell you that, of course, as there are regular reports in the media about the damage that has and is being done to the environment. A quick glance outside of your window will also alert you to evidence of this fact, such as the sight of litter on the road or the smoke that is being pumped out of any passing vehicle.

Thankfully, steps can be made to protect the environment, some of which can be carried out at home. But if you run your own business, there are specific things you can action to ensure the world is a safer place to live in. Not only will you benefit the environment if you do, but you will also benefit your business if you concentrate on being eco-friendly. If you are unsure of where to start or the changes you need to make, environmental engineers can assist you in implementing environmental solutions for your business. Take a look at the reasons why in the linked article.

So, here are just a few of the things you can do within your business to protect the environment.

#1: Remove waste responsibly

Businesses create lots of waste, much of which is dangerous to the environment. We are thinking of packaging waste, for example, including plastics and cardboard. And we are also thinking of oil and grease waste, which is particularly common within the food industry. To prevent damage to the environment (and to the local wildlife), you should remove such waste responsibly. You can do this by choosing an eco-friendly company to dispose of your waste, such as GF Commodities who offer a cooking oil and yellow grease pick-up service.

#2: Reduce the need for travel

The fewer cars there are on the road the better, so consider this within your business. You could give your employees the opportunity to work from home if your business model can allow that. And you could use Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or any other video communication software for your team and client meetings. These are just two of the things you can do to reduce the need for travel and the air pollution that comes from car emissions, so follow these suggestions if you can.

#3: Create eco-friendly rules for your employees to follow

Perhaps by pinning signs up around your business, remind your employees to follow eco-friendly rules as they are going about their day. These can include:

  • Use recycling bins for waste
  • Power down equipment when not in use
  • Turn off lights when leaving a room
  • Lay off the thermostat when the office isn’t cold

Follow these rules yourself and set a good example for your employees.

#4: Go paperless

Paper waste is another problem that affects the planet today as it contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. The more you can do to reduce paper waste, the better. You can do this by using less paper in your office, so consider where changes could be made. It might be that you save your important files on the cloud instead of in your filing cabinets, for example. And you could set up automated payments to reduce the need for printed checks when paying employees and clients. Check out these other tips for a paperless office

These are just a few ideas but there is much more you can do to protect the environment. You could purchase energy-efficient equipment, for example, and you could embrace renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind energy to power up your business. Continue your research online and get together with your team to discuss other ideas.
