“Hocus Pocus” is a perfect blend of comedy, fantasy, and adventure, and is known for its witty dialogue, memorable characters, and spooky and lighthearted moments. The original film by Kenny Ortega which released in 1993 was not an instant hit. Nevertheless, the film has gained a cult following over the years and is particularly popular during the Halloween season.
In 2022, Disney made a sequel to the film. The Anne Fletcher directorial got phenomenal response amassing 5.7 billion minutes of viewing time of which 2.7 billion minutes came in the first weekend, setting a record.
After success like that, Hocus Pocus 3 doesn’t come as a surprise. At the premiere of Hocus Pocus 2, executive producer Adam Shankman hinted at the possibility of another sequel when he said that there were more stories to be told.
Both the 1993 movie and the 2022 sequel featured Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson sisters — Winifred, Sarah and Mary. We’re not sure if we’ll see the same cast in the new movie. When asked about reprising her role, Bette Midler told Entertainment Weekly, “I’d love to have a franchise — especially a character I love playing,” she said. “If there was a third one, of course I’d sign on, but I don’t know how.”
Set in the imaginary city of Salem, Hocus Pocus follows the story of a teenager Max and his sister Dani who accidentally awaken 17th century witches – the Sanderson sisters who were executed for practicing dark magic and have been cursed to roam the Earth as spirits until a virgin lights the Black Flame Candle on Halloween night. In the sequel we have seen Max’s daughter as a protagonist. It remains to be seen who’ll drive the story of the third movie, and also if we’ll see the witches in action again.
