Milton Powell, also known as “Big Pokey” died on Sunday at a rooftop bar in Beaumont, Texas. The Houston-based rapper was 45 years old.
Powell was performing at the Pour09 Bar & Rooftop lounge when he faced some medical issues. At 11.57 pm at night on Sunday, the authorities of the bar called 911 reporting an unconscious person according to Beaumont Police Department public information officer Haley Morrow. She said, “It was 11:57 p.m. when we received a 911 call for an unconscious person.” She added that 10 minutes after officers reached the venue they called for additional units to control the crowd that had gathered around the scene. Bar authorities were also present as is the custom during big events.
Officer Morrow has confirmed that a post mortem autopsy will be done to determine the exact cause of Big Pokey’s unexpected death.

Pour09 Bar & Rooftop lounge has extended condolences toward the deceased rapper’s family through a Facebook post. The post said, “Out of respect for those involved we will not be commenting on the incident to allow his family and friends ample time to mourn and make a statement when they are ready. This is a tragedy that no one expect and only our prayers go out to his family and friends.”
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner shared his good wishes with the family tweeting “Though many called him ‘low key,’ his presence was larger than life in helping to catapult our hip hop scene nationally… We are grateful.“
