How Best to Prepare for Exams

No matter whether you are at school, university, or you are already employed, taking on exams of any kind is enough to fill anyone with stress and dread. So, you need to ensure that you prepare yourself properly to give yourself the best chance of acing them. While everyone prepare for exams in slightly different ways, there are a few common techniques that work for a lot of people. Here are some that could offer you a helping hand.

Begin Early

The last thing that you want is to feel stressed trying to cram everything in all at once. So, whether you are doing MCAT prep or maths revision, you should make sure that you have enough time to complete everything properly. Work out how much time you need to devote each day to ensure that you hit your target. Ideally, this will be at the same time each and every day as this will allow you to get into something of a routine, which works well for many people’s brains.

Create Study Goals

Before you begin each study session, it is worth having a goal in mind for exactly what you would like to achieve from it. This way, you will focus your mind and have something clear that you are working towards rather than aimless revision. At the end of the session, you need to be honest with yourself about whether or not you have achieved your goal. If not, it is worth identifying the reason why this is the case, which will allow you to make improvements for next time.

Use a Range of Revision Techniques

It can get awfully boring if you are doing the same revision techniques again and again. So, to stop yourself from going crazy, it is worth using a range of different methods for the information to go in. If you only read from a textbook all the time, try listening to podcasts, watching videos, creating mnemonics, setting yourself quizzes etc. Make sure that your learning is as active as possible rather than simply scanning your eyes over the page in front of you without really taking anything in.

Rest and Eat Right

A lot of your studying can be influenced by what you are doing away from the books as well. You need to ensure that you are getting enough rest every night to ensure that your brain’s synapses are firing as they should be. Also, choose a balanced diet and get some exercise as well. If you are trying to get by on sugar and caffeine, this can easily lead to spikes and crashes, which will end up having the opposite effect to the one that you were intending.

Have a Positive Attitude

It can get disheartening along the way but try to stay as positive as possible and celebrate your smaller achievements as you tick them off the list. Positivity can help to breed success. A study buddy can help keep your spirits up.
