Neuralink chip is gearing up for its first human implant later this year, according to Elon Musk. Elon Musk’s Neuralink is looking for a clinical trial director. It takes the company closer to building a technology that can directly connect the human mind to gadgets.
The objective of Neuralink is to create a “brain-computer interface.” It will allow humans to wirelessly transmit and receive information between their brains and computers.
“A Fitbit in your skull with tiny cables,” Musk said of Neuralink’s chip. It is around 23 millimetres (0.9 inches) in diameter.
Attempts to cure paralysis
Elon Musk’s business, Neuralink, is developing implants that allow people to communicate with machines just by thinking. According to Neuralink’s chief surgeon, Dr. Matthew MacDougall, the company plans to do preliminary clinical studies. It will start with a small number of human patients to cure paralysis.
People with severe spinal cord injuries will benefit first from Neuralink’s technology. Neuralink states that the chip will allow them to communicate, type, and move using their brain waves.
But how do they accomplish this?
Electrodes placed near neurons can collect and record the electric impulses generated by neurons in the brain. Even Neuralink has a complicated technology. Repeating these impulses can recreate the sensation of other activities, such as touching an apple or kissing another person, in a rudimentary sense.
On Friday, the brain-chip firm published a film that appeared to show a monkey playing a simple video game. The firm planted the latest technological implants on it. As per the explanation by the video narrator, Neuralink works by employing more than 2,000 electrodes implanted in areas of the monkey’s motor cortex. It controlled hand and arm motions to capture and decode electrical signals from the brain.
Through firms like Tesla Inc, SpaceX, and Boring Co., Musk has a history of bringing together numerous experts. He wanted to build technology that was previously exclusive to university labs.
Connecting a brain to technology is not new. For instance, to administer stimulation to patients, doctors use electrodes implanted in the brain of patients—especially those suffering from Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, or chronic pain.
On the other hand, Musk wants to go further by expanding on existing medical treatments. Moreover, he might work on operations that might boost brain function in the future.
