The Degrassi franchise is heating up again.
‘Degrassi: Next Class’ fans will have a show to watch on Netflix. Even after revival on HBO Max, this long-running Canadian drama won’t be shifting from its current home. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix will be keeping the teen drama in its lineup since Degrassi: Next Class. It isn’t a part of any HBO Max deal.
The news comes after WarnerMedia announced the acquisition of all 14 seasons of Degrassi: The Next Generation, as well as a new reboot of the series slated to premiere on HBO Max in 2023.
This series will be the newest addition to the franchise. No casting announcements are in the works, but fans of the original series can hope to see a few familiar faces.
In the past, episodes of the series have addressed issues like teen pregnancy, racism, AIDS, abuse, gender identity, violence, etc. while grabbing viewers on a coming-of-age journey with a bunch of diverse, relatable teenagers.
Talking about the upcoming series Warner Bros. Head of Kids & Family Programming Amy Friedman stated, “Series after series! The Degrassi franchise continues to make an indelible impact on young viewers looking for trustworthy and authentic storytelling. WildBrain continues to artfully capture high school life in a compelling format that can be seen seamlessly on HBO Max.”
In response, WildBrain CEO Eric Ellenbogen expressed, “I’m delighted that our first-ever commission from HBO Max is for Degrassi! A truly venerable franchise with a highly devoted and passionate audience. This is yet another evergreen property from our vast IP library reviving with a fresh vision and creative-first approach.”
