Nimona is an animated movie based on the best-selling graphic novel with the same name by ND Stevenson. The graphic novel was released as a webcomic in 2012 and a paper-back graphic novel in 2015. The animation adaptation of Nimona has been acquired by Netflix.
The movie will be released in June, 2023, to the utter joy of Nimona enthusiasts and the creator of the graphic novel ND Stevenson himself. ND Stevenson went on to say, “Nimona’s always been a spunky little story that just wouldn’t stop. She’s a fighter…but she’s also got some really awesome people fighting for her. I am excited out of my mind to announce that THE NIMONA MOVIE IS ALIVE…coming at you in 2023 from Annapurna and Netflix”.
The development of the animated film first started in 2015 under 20th Century Fox. Blue Sky Studios, the animation wing of Fox, was in charge of the project. Production was well underway when Disney acquired Fox and decided to close down Blue Sky since the company already had Pixar and Walt Disney Animation. The project was halted and the producers were certain that Nimona would never reach the screen.

In February 2022, Netflix filed a copyright for the name Nimona. In the following month Netflix announced having taken Nimona in and the production resumed in the first half of 2022 itself. The animated movie is set in a techno-medieval world with a unique plotline. Netflix has released an official teaser as well as a summary –
“A Knight is framed for a crime he didn’t commit and the only person who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a shape-shifting teen who might also be a monster he’s sworn to kill. Set in a techno-medieval world unlike anything animation has tackled before, this is a story about the labels we assign to people and the shapeshifter who refuses to be defined by anyone.”
