Maria Bello pitched this movie to Viola Davis during the ‘Women Making History Awards Ceremony 2015’ in front of a live audience. Davis was taken away by this outstandingly horrific story and from the Los Angeles National Women’s History Museum, The Woman King came a long way into becoming a fully-fledged movie in 2022 where Davis and Bello are the co-producers. The Woman King Story

The Woman King is set in the late 1800s in Dahomey, a kingdom located in West Africa. The story of The Woman King introduces us to the Agojie, an all-female military regiment who are willing to sacrifice their lives in exchange for the freedom of their motherland. Historians call these warrior women Dahomey amazons because of their uncanny resemblance to the mythological Amazons. War being the constant marker of death and the sole reason for the high mortality rate of men in Dahomey compels the women to take up weapons in order to fight for their kingdom and save it from outside aggressors. At one point, the Dahomey military, in its entirety, becomes an all-women regime.

The Woman King cast consists of Viola Davis as the chief protagonist who plays the role of General Nanisca when Dahomey is faced with a threat from the European forces. They are faced with an epic war and how she fights these blood-thirsty European hounds is based on the Franco-Dahomeyan war that happened between 1890 and 1894. Played by Thuso Mbedu, Nawi is a new recruit of the Dahomey Amazons who is a character based on the very real ‘last Dahomey Amazon’ of the same name. Nawi, in a 1978 interview, said that she fought against the French in 1892. She went on to live until 1979 when she succumbed to natural death.

Video by Sony Pictures Entertainment

We see the Dahomey Amazons or the Agojie having multiple references in popular culture long before it was actually featured in The Woman King. The 2018 Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, The Black Panther, showed us something strikingly similar to the Dahomey Amazons. In The Black Panther, we saw the Dora Milaje, an all-female military unit, instead of the Dahomey Amazons who were equally trained for serving as guards and bodyguards.
