The new ‘Scream’ movie is all set to give you shivers on January 14, 2022. This horror thriller will be released in theatres and cinemas worldwide. Lately, Netflix has signed a lot of deals with big studios for streaming rights to their shows and movies. But, ViacomCBS doesn’t seem to be on that list. Unlike other film companies, ViacomCBS’s Paramount Pictures does not license its movies to competitors—it keeps them for itself.
According to sources, Paramount might cut back on the number of days it waits before releasing a film to home video after its theatrical run. In the case of Scream 5, Paramount plans to keep their movie sequestered to theatres for 45 days. If that’s the case, the fifth instalment of the Scream franchise will probably stream on ViacomCBS’s owned streaming service, Paramount+ on February 27, 2022, rather than Netflix.
Although there is no official announcement regarding this, it seems that there won’t be a Scream 5 on Netflix. The reason for that is Paramount has an interesting licensing strategy.
The company licences older movies to Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu. But, it’s newer library isn’t for sale on these streaming platforms. Paramount’s latest releases are primarily exclusive to its own streaming service, Paramount+. This means that the fifth instalment of the franchise may never stream via Netflix after all.
Netflix has heavily invested in the Scream franchise, carrying global rights to the MTV TV series, advertised as a Netflix Original. As of January 2022, seasons 1 and 2 of Scream are available on Netflix worldwide. However, the third season is exclusive for US subscribers only.
Scream 4 is still available for streaming on Netflix UK. Although, it doesn’t look like Netflix has the rights to stream any of the Scream movies anywhere else.
Scream 5 streaming on Netflix Impossible?
The studio announced in June 2020 that they will be producing a fifth instalment of the hit franchise. Scream 5 will bring back several members of the original Scream film series, including Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers/Riley, and David Arquette as Dewey Riley.
The new instalment will also be introducing several new promising stars such as Melissa Barrera, Kyle Gallner, Jack Quaid, Mikey Madison, (and more!) to the Scream franchise.
The original cast members of the horror franchise ‘Scream’ weren’t always guaranteed to return for a fifth instalment, especially after Wes Craven, the director of the first four instalments, passed.
According to reports, Campbell had been unsure whether she wanted to reprise her role, but she changed her mind after receiving a heartfelt letter from the directors Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett, which convinced her to return to the franchise. The executive producer Kevin Williamson describes this film as a “relaunch of the franchise.” The plot kicks off 25 years after the events of the first film, which terrified the locals of Woodsboro.
