‘Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’ Preview: Controlling Cal is Way More Fun Now

‘Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’ Preview: Controlling Cal is Way More Fun Now

Well, the 2019 “Jedi: Fallen Order” gave birth to a larger, improved, and way more polished sequel

Playing Jedi: Survivor made me feel like I had reunited with an old friend after many years. After spending one hour in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, I saw the protagonist of the game Cal Kestis, reunite with Greez Dritus. Greez happens to be the cranky pilot from Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. They embrace each other after spending five years away from each other. We can see Greez having a robotic prosthetic arm in place of one of his four arms.

The game feels like a more improved version of its predecessor, Jedi: Fallen Order. The preview started on Koboh. It is one of the first planets that players will experience when later this month they get access to the game. What happens in Koboh is compelling as we find Cal rediscovering all his abilities at the end of the previous game. Players will also experience better controlling of Cal with more weight and precision assigned to their movements. For starters, we won’t see Cal float whenever he jumps the way he did in Jedi: Fallen Order. In terms of combat, Cal seems way more deadly and swift with his lightsaber.

Stig Asmussen, the director of the game states, “Cal has a bit of swagger now, and that was intentional. We wanted the player to feel that.” Amussen continues, “Keep in mind [Jedi: Fallen Order] was the first time for us.” Before Jedi: Fallen Order, those working at the studio were the creators of games such as Call of Duty and Titanfall. He further stated, “We were learning while we were making that game – we’re still learning – but as we were building it, we got better at building it.”

To be honest, when the preview came to the end, I felt even more thrilled to play Star Wars Jedi: Survivor than when I started playing the game. It seemed like a safe sequel to me. However, I didn’t witness any of its latest mechanics, such as Cal’s newfound capability of taming mounts as well as flight with NPC companions. But I doubt that these new additions will turn the game into something that it wasn’t existing before.
