There once was a time when console and PC gaming ruled the roost. Back then no serious gamer would consider playing on a mobile device or tablet. But how things have changed.
Today, it’s estimated that around 60% of all gaming takes place on mobiles and the global market is said to be worth around $160 billion. It’s also growing at a rate of around 8% a year. So by 2027 it could be worth as much as $241 billion with 1.8 billion players worldwide.
It’s also no surprise that there is a real plethora of mobile games available – and even streaming services like Netflix are launching gaming titles. But how to choose which ones to play?
Luckily, we’ve been looking around for a range of titles that more than reward a few hours spent playing them and here are our top ten.
Hero Wars
It’s easy to get the wrong idea bout this game from all the ads for it that tend to pop up online. They show it mainly as a puzzle game but it’s far more involving than that. Your task is to put together a team of explorers to make it through a series of dungeons – and if they can’t hack it you can choose to enhance or replace them.
Angry Birds 2
Angry Birds has proved to be one of the most successful of all the mobile game franchises. Try your hand at Angry Birds 2 and you’ll soon see why. It’s all a question of firing the incensed avians at flying pigs who are hell-bent on stealing the eggs and storing them in their towers. It’s just as much fun to play against friends as it is to go offline and play solo.
Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp
Here’s another winner from a very popular franchise. But, instead of trying to shepherd creatures safely across the road, it’s more a case of setting up and furnishing a camp where you can all live in harmony. With over 1000 items to choose from to create your camp and 100 animal friends to nurture this has to be very nearly the ultimate in good-natured fun.
888 Poker
In recent times there has been a huge upsurge of interest in poker games online. In many respects it’s apps like this that have driven this interest. It lets you play a wide range of games wherever you are, whenever you want and it’s just as suitable for relative novices as it is for more experienced players. There is even the choice of cash games or tournament play depending on you preferred style.
Mafia City
The Mob has always had a grip on the public’s imagination. So if you fancy yourself as a bit of a Tony Soprano or Vito Corleone than this could be the game for you. It’s a strategy game par excellence that sees you running an organised crime syndicate in a modern city. You get to decide what buildings to construct as you develop your empire. And the more you achieve, the more powerful you become. But watch out. Your enemies will be looking to bring you down.
Color Road!
It may be that you feel that simplicity is the key to a great mobile game. In that case, games don’t get much simpler than Color Road! You roll a coloured ball along, on the way you have to direct to ones of the same colour and keep it away from all the others. It’s a great test of hand-eye coordination as well as real fun. The number of five star reviews it’s received tell you all you need to know about the game.
Granny Chapter 2
The set-up is simple. An evil Granny has locked you in her house and you need to escape. Except Grandpa’s in there too and his job is to stop you. So you have to make your way through dark corridors and across creaking floorboards and the time is limited. There are places to hide in case you’re about to get caught – but finding them can be as tricky as making the actual escape.
Forge of Empires
Here’s a game that’s nearly as good a history lesson as it is a playing experience. Moving through time, you need to create a range of different settlements, or empires, using all the resources at your disposal. As you’d expect, there’s many hours of entertainment in this game – and it even takes you into the future as you create a whole new colony in space.
Infinity Ops
Also set firmly in the future, Infinity Ops is all about the interplanetary warfare genre that’s played out in front of brightly-coloured 3D graphics. Your arsenal consists of a wide range of weaponry from laser guns to plasma rifles. Jetpacks send you air-borne and the action is non-stop. It’s also a great game to play online with friends as you work together to ensure victory.
Thimbleweed Park
