‘The Black Phone’ Review: Ethan Hawke Plays The Role Of A Serial Killer

'The Black Phone' Review: Ethan Hawke Plays The Role Of A Serial Killer

If you love horror movies, you must also love the pair of Actor Ethan Hawke and the filmmaker Scott Derrickson pair. To remind you, they previously worked together in the legendary horror movie “Sinister.” And the pair has come back with the new horror flick- “The Black Phone.”

While Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” by Scott Derrickson was also a delight, his main strength lies in the horror genre. The co-writer here with Scott Derrickson is C. Robert Cargill.

The world premiere of The Black Phone took place at the Fantastic Fest on September 25, 2021. And now, The Black Phone’s release date in the theaters has been set to June 24, 2022.

What Is The Story Based On?

The Black Phone short story is based on Joe Hill’s short story. It came out in 2004 with the same name. The setting of The Black Phone movie is in Colorado in 1978. The movie follows the story of a young boy, Finney Shaw, who gets abducted by the masked villain- The Grabber. The great Ethan Hawke plays the role of villain here. And then starts the survival game along with a supernatural touch.

Another main part of the movie is a disconnected rotary phone in Finney’s cell. Somehow, he can communicate with the previous victims of The Grabber through this phone. And the victims are determined this time to save Finney from meeting the same fate. Finney’s sister, Gwen Shaw, on the other hand, is trying to save him via the psychic visions she is getting. And the camaraderie of the siblings is thanks to their father, played by Jeremy Davies, who treats them ridiculously. This makes the siblings have a strong back for each other.

Is It Worth Watching?

Yers, it is definitely worth watching! The movie has a unique storyteing that keeps the viewers glued to the seats.  The viewers feel engulfed with a terrifying and creepy feeling. And this is evident from the first jump scare that you wil experience in themovie’s first half itself.

A Little Spoiler

One of the most engaging scenes in the movie is Gwen unlocking a combination lock. This results from realistic and supernatural events that are imposed on each other.

Another intriguing feature of the film is the signature mask of The Grabber, designed by Tom Savin. While playing the villain’s role is a challenge, the portrayal of an iconic horror villain is even more challenging. The serial killer storyline adds a huge element of thrill to the whole story. This main component forces the viewers to get stuck to their screens.

And the ending of The Black Phone is as satisfying as the entire storyline. Most other horror movies end abruptly or speculatively. But our great Scott Derrickson has very intelligently ended the story, keeping in mind the viewers’ satisfaction.

Talking about The Black Phone cast, the role of the villain is played by Ethan Hawke. Mason Thames plays Finney Shaw’s role. Madeleine McGraw plays the role of Gwen Shaw. Apart from these main roles, James Ransone, Gina Jun, and Jeremy Davies, among others, are also there.

Overall, The Black Phone’s full movie runtime of 1h 42m passes quite fast and is worth watching.
