The Impact of Google Algorithm Update on SEO and Ranking of Websites

Google uses the term Google algorithms for the complex systems that allow Google to offer the best possible results for the searches done by the users. It is not easy to understand the algorithms because they can be pretty confusing. Google has released a lot of different algorithms over the years to ensure better performance.

Google uses a variety of algorithms to find and rank websites efficiently. The algorithm makes sure that websites are able to get the ranking that it deserves. The algorithms can impact the SEO of the website and damage the ranking of the website.

Google does not always announce the algorithms that they are announcing so it is impossible to tell if a new algorithm has been introduced unless you check the ranking of the site. The experienced SEO people are able to tell if a new algorithm has been introduced based on the variations in the search results.

Here are some major algorithm updates released by Google and its impact on SEO and branding.

The content algorithm: Panda

The panda algorithm introduced in 2011 was known as the content algorithm because it was designed to target websites with low-quality content and bad user experience. The websites that had content issues like duplicate and thin content or excessive external links, keyword stuffing and spamming were impacted by the Panda algorithm.

To make sure that the website does not suffer because of the panda algorithm then the websites have to create content that is creative, high-quality, informational and engaging. The content should be valuable to the target audience. The keywords and external links should be used properly. If you are creating quality content then half of the SEO is done. If the website contains portions that have user-generated content like the comment section then you should make sure that there is little spamming content. Content moderation is the perfect approach for making sure that the website is able to pass the regulations set by the Panda algorithm.

The penguin algorithm:

In 2012 introduced the Penguin algorithm and it allowed Google to identify spammy backlink building done by the website owners to improve the ranking of the site and better branding. The websites often used a variety of unethical methods to increase the traffic and ranking of the website. The links from low-quality spam websites, PBNs, and private blog networks are created to build links, over-optimized anchor texts, and paid links. The penguin algorithm allowed Google to identify low-quality backlinks and penalize the websites that are violating Google’s policy regarding the quality of backlinks.

To avoid penalty from penguin algorithm it is important that the website stays away from low-quality and irrelevant sites. The website should always prefer white-hat SEO services so that you only have high-quality backlinks and the best way to attract them is to produce high-quality content.

The Hummingbird algorithm:

The hummingbird algorithm that was launched in 2013 was designed to allow Google to understand the intent of the user rather than just the words that are in the query.  The algorithm has changed the way Google interprets the search query, bringing equal importance to the synonyms and terms related to the keyword used in the query. It is helpful in optimizing the search engine optimization.

The hummingbird algorithm made sure that a good website focuses on the concept instead of simply using the keywords to present better results.

The local pigeon algorithm:

2014 brought Pigeon algorithm and it was designed to help Google in providing accurate and relevant local search. The algorithm has a direct impact on the searches that are related to the location of the user. The local search results are affected by the traditional SEO factors along with other various other local SEO factors. Things like poorly optimized pages can have an impact on the local ranking of the local pages. Some other factors that allow the pigeon algorithm to lower the ranking of the local pages include poor Google my business pages, no local directory citations and inconsistent NAP.

To maintain good ranking and SEO it is important that the website is able to maintain proper listings in quality directories. There should be consistency in name, contact information, address in the website.

Mobilegeddon algorithm:

It is a mobile-friendly algorithm that was introduced by Google in 2015. The update makes sure that the websites that are mobile-friendly get better ranking as compared to the ones that are not mobile friendly. People use smartphones a lot and use their phones for internet researches. It is an additional requirement along with the quality and relevancy of the content to improve the SEO of the website.

To make sure that the algorithm helps in improving the ranking of the website you have to improve the SEO of the site by making it mobile-friendly. It will make sure that the site is able to survive the upgrade. High page speed, responsive design is going to help you in improving the SEO of the site.

Newgate algorithm:

In 2019 the Google released an algorithm update that is designed to target the websites that are publishing the content on Google News. The algorithm lowered the ranking of the websites that were publishing content that was largely copied and did not add any additional value to the story that is being shared. The algorithm also impacts the ranking of the site that is not transparent about the source of the news story.

Google algorithms are introduced to make sure that users are able to get the best search results. The websites have to work hard to make sure that the search results are useful and informational. The websites using legitimate SEO techniques are unlikely to suffer because of the introduction of new algorithms. Make sure that you avoid using black-hat SEO methods and the website will be safe from Google algorithm updates. The SEO experts should be on the lookout for any significant drop in traffic and if they coincide with the upgrades then it is time to reexamine the content, structure and SEO strategies of the website.
