The Unique Story of 'Society Of The Snow': Soon to be on Netflix!

Netflix is taking a chance on something new — and it’s not a TV show. The streaming service has ordered a film, Society of the Snow, based on the real-life story of the tragic Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571.

Award-winning Spanish director J.A. Bayona of The Orphanage, A Monster Calls, Jurassic World: the Fallen Kingdom, Amazon’s upcoming Lord of the Rings series, is reported to be directing the film. J.A. Bayona, Bernat Vilaplana, Jaime Marques, and Nicolás Casariego will be writing the movie.

This Netflix original stars, Enzo Vogrincic Roldán, Matías Recalt, Agustín Pardella, Tomas Wolf, Diego Ariel Vegezzi, Esteban Kukuriczka, Francisco Romero, Rafael Federman, Felipe González Otaño, Agustín Della Corte, Valentino Alonso, Simón Hempe, Fernando Contigiani García, Benjamín Segura and Jerónimo Bosia.

Adapted from the novel La Sociedad de la nieve by the famous Pablo Vierci, Netflix will make this movie entirely in Spanish. It should prove fun for those who like their entertainment in foreign languages.

When asked about how he came about directing this film, director J. A. Bayona quoted, “It was during the documentation process for The Impossible that I discovered Society of the Snow, Pablo Vierci’s fascinating chronicle about the tragedy of the Andes. More than 10 years later, my fascination for the novel remains intact, and I am happy to face the challenge that lies ahead. To tell one of the most remembered events of the 20th century, with all the complexity that implies a story that gives so much relevance to the survivors. Also, to those who never returned from the mountains. Netflix will be making this movie in Spanish. A language that I excitedly return to after 14 years. I am thrilled to work with a team of young Uruguayan and Argentine actors.”

What is Society of the Snow about?

Society of the Snow (La Sociedad de la Nieve) recounts the saga of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571. In 1972 a rugby team boarded this chartered flight to Chile. However, the flight never reached its destination and crashed on a glacier in the Andes. 11 of the 45 passengers died. Twenty-nine people survived the crash but had to face one of the earth’s extremest conditions. The adverse weather conditions and shortage of food and water compelled them to resort to drastic measures. This includes even cannibalism, to survive.

Atienza and Hermida, producers of the upcoming film, commented on the project, “After a few years working on the project, we are very terribly excited to start filming Society of the Snow. We want to thank Netflix for its unwavering support of this project. We will be shooting it entirely in Spanish. Also, we like to thank the survivors and the families of those who perished in the tragedy. We are grateful to them for their enormous generosity in sharing their story with us.”

Netflix’s Society of the Snow is currently in progress as per the latest reports. However, there is also no set release date for the upcoming Netflix flick as of yet, but we can probably expect to stream the film in 2023.
