On the Stop the Violence Tour, Ice’s manager saw potential in him and decided to produce a demo tape. In 1989, “Play That Funky Music” was released as a single by Ichiban Records with “Ice Ice Baby” as its B-side. However, one day a DJ played “Ice ice baby” during a radio show thinking it was mistaken thinking it was supposed to be “Play that funky music.” Surprisingly, the crowd loved “Ice ice baby.”
Rapper Suge Knight and his bodyguards ran into rapper Ice Van Winkle by chance while they were both dining at a West Hollywood restaurant one night. Later that evening, after their meal had concluded, Knight and his security team showed up unannounced to Van Winkle’s hotel room on the 15th floor of the former Bel Age Hotel (currently known as the London Hotel) located on Sunset Boulevard. According to Ice, Knight forced him out onto the balcony and said he would throw him over unless he signed away the rights to “Ice, Ice Baby.” Van Winkle gave in, and Knight used that money as seed funding for Death Row Records.
In Vanilla Ice’s debut album, “To the Extreme,” he reached number one on the album charts and remained there for 16 weeks – setting a then record for fastest selling hip hop album of all time. He continued to release five more studio albums: 1994’s “Mind Blowin’,” 1998’s “Hard to Swallow,” 2001’s “Bi-Polar,” and 2005’s “Platinum Underground.” And his most recent work in 2011, “W.T.F (Wisdom, Tenacity, Focus.)
