In a short blog post published on May 22, WhatsApp has announced the new feature where you can edit a sent message within 15 minutes of sending it. “For the moments when you make a mistake, or simply change your mind, you can now edit your sent messages,” said the post. All you need to do is, long press on the message you want to edit and choose the edit option from the menu.
After you have edited the message it will be marked as edited to let the recipient know that you have modified the text. However, unlike Facebook posts, the edit history would not be visible to the recipients. The edits will be end-to-end encrypted. WhatsApp has started rolling out the feature across the globe and everyone will get access to the feature within a couple of weeks.

WhatsApp, the messaging platform owned by Meta, has over 2 billion users worldwide. It faces quite a lot of competition from platforms like Discord, Telegram, and Signal. By adding this feature, WhatsApp has kind of followed in the footsteps of its competitors. Although Facebook, another major product of Meta, has had the edit feature for a decade now. Tweets can also be edited for up to 30 minutes of posting, this feature was added to Twitter last year.
Notably WhatsApp launched the delete message feature in 2017 and the delete for everyone feature in 2018. With the edit feature, WhatsApp has given their users more control over their communication pattern. However, the fact that the edit history is not visible can create a bit of ruckus considering that some people might use the edit message feature unethically. There hasn’t been too much discussion about the ethical side of this feature, but some people would probably face issues regarding this in the future.
