Central Florida Gets a New 689 Area Code, Along with 407 and 321

Received a text message or a call from a number that begins with 689 and wondered, What is the area of the code? You are not alone. The same question interests many. In this article, I’ll be covering all your concerns and questions.

Why does Florida even have a new area code?

Central Florida is growing fast. More people are moving in, and businesses are expanding. That means a bigger need for phone numbers. The old area codes like 407 and 321 were running out. So Florida introduced a new one, 689, to keep up.

But don’t worry. This isn’t something that will turn your phone world upside down. It’s a smooth change, and I’ll explain why.

Where is area code 689 being used?

Good question. The 689 area code now covers:

    • Orange County
    • Osceola County
    • Seminole County
    • Parts of Lake and Volusia counties

Basically, it’s popping up in the same places that already use 407 and 321. But instead of replacing those codes, 689 is being added on top. This is called an overlay. So yes, 407, 321, and 689 will all be used in the same region.

    Who’s getting a 689 number?

If you already have a number that starts with 407 or 321, relax. You keep your number. No changes needed.

But if you’re signing up for new phone service, adding a line, or moving into the area, there’s a chance your new number could start with 689. And that’s perfectly normal.

Now I know what you might be thinking. “Wait, I got a call from a 689 number. Is it real?”

Yep. As calls from the 689 area code start to show up more, you’ll get used to it. Just like we did with 321 and 407.

Some phones might temporarily show 689 calls as “Spam Risk.” It’s not because the number is from some fraud. It’s just that some caller ID systems haven’t caught up yet. Give it time, and things will sort out.

What about spam texts from 689?

The dreaded area code 689 spam text message.

Some folks have received weird or suspicious messages from 689 numbers. If that happens to you, remember the rule. If it looks sketchy, don’t click on any links. Just block the number and report it.

So don’t assume all 689 numbers are spam. Most of them are perfectly legit. You might get a text from a doctor’s office, your kid’s school, or a delivery service, all from a 689 phone number.

New rule: 10-digit dialing for everyone

Here’s a change you will notice.

No matter which area code you’re using, 407, 321, or 689, you now have to dial all 10 digits for every local call. That means area code plus number.

So instead of just dialing 555-1234, you now have to dial something like 689-555-1234 or 407-555-1234, depending on the number.

    What about emergency calls?

Don’t worry. Those stay the same. Don’t worry, you can still call 911, 211, 311, and other 3-digit numbers the same way as before. Nothing has changed there. So in an emergency, just call like you always have.

Does a 689 number cost more?

Nope. No extra charges. No surprises on your bill. A 689 phone number works the same way as the others. Your call rates, billing, and services stay the same.

What do businesses need to do?

There are some rapid actions you could take, in case your business is in the 689 area. Put your full ten-digit code on both your website and published print books. Make sure your phone and caller ID can recognize numbers with the 689 area code. Be sure your voicemail, fax, and auto-dial apparatus are also ready. The little steps will prevent any arising problems.

    Final thoughts

Change can feel confusing, especially when it shows up as a mystery number on your screen. But this time it’s nothing to stress about.
