Since 2023, Netflix has been experimenting with live-streaming events in a move that challenges traditional cable broadcasters. It has since hosted several live comedy specials, real-time coverage of sports events, awards shows, and reality show reunions, with clear plans to expand its output in 2025. We’ve explored this exciting development in this in-depth guide.

    The Power of Live Entertainment

Since the major streaming services were launched, they were long unable to match the appeal of live broadcasting that traditional networks were known for. Live coverage of everything from sports to awards ceremonies has a special ability to bring together people around the world and share in a moment that is unfolding before our eyes.

Live streaming has now become ubiquitous across all forms of entertainment, whether through social media or music shows. The online gambling industry has been especially adept at offering live-streamed products, with live casino gambling offering players the chance to play blackjack, roulette, and more against a real-life dealer. It was only a matter of time before Netflix invested in the technology’s potential.

Netflix’s Foray into Live Streaming So Far

In March 2023, Netflix hosted a live performance of comedian Chris Rock’s latest special, which marked a momentous return to form after a five-year hiatus. In the following year, the streamer offered live recordings of a Love is Blind reunion and a baby animal camera set-up at Cleveland Metroparks.

The year culminated with its first sports event, The Netflix Cup, which saw Drive to Survive’s F1 racers compete in a golfing event. This year, the streamer’s output was steadier. In addition to a live stream of the Screen Actors Guild Awards in February, it also showcased The Netflix Slam tennis event, Joe Rogan’s new comedy special, and the Chestnut vs Kobayashi hotdog eating competition.

    2025: Netflix Increases Live Output

Before the year is out, Netflix is set to air the highly anticipated boxing match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson. It will also show two live NFL games on Christmas Day, including the Chiefs vs the Steelers and the Ravens vs the Texans. But this is just the tip of the iceberg in its sports coverage.

In January 2024, Netflix announced a new partnership with WWE Raw, which would see the streamer become the new home of the wrestling organization’s broadcasts. The first live events are set to debut in January 2025, with new episodes to be released weekly throughout the year.

A new variety talk show hosted by Comedian John Mulaney is also set to air in the new year, which is likely to rival broadcast late-night shows such as Late Night and The Tonight Show. With fewer content restrictions on live services, this is likely to offer a fresh and adult take on the beloved format.

A New Era of Digital Entertainment

Netflix has indicated that it aims to heavily invest in the live-streaming sector next year, whether it be through sports broadcasting, comedy specials, or awards shows. The streamer’s unique position in the entertainment ecosystem suggests that these specials will take full advantage of Netflix’s capabilities to showcase global events to billions of people at once.
