Let me ask you something: Have you ever watched a TV show set in a place so real, so alive, that by the end, you feel like you’ve lived there? It was my experience with “Turn of the Tide” (Rabo de Peixe). In this article, I will take you through the release date, the cast, and the news related to the drama.

A Village That Feels Like a Character

Rabo de Peixe is a quaint fishing village situated on São Miguel Island in the Azores, deep in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean. It is a community where everyone is familiar with one another, where the sea serves as both a source of prosperity and an enigma, and where rumors offer the greatest thrill. This tightly woven, habitual environment is depicted in Turn of the Tide, which subsequently upends everything.

In real life, something wild happened here in 2001: a huge stash of cocaine washed up on the beach. That’s the true-life spark for the show, and honestly, you can’t make up a better premise for drama. Imagine being a local, maybe someone who’s never even thought about breaking the law, and suddenly, you’re staring at a fortune sitting at your feet. Would you walk away, call the cops, or, like Eduardo and his friends, try to figure out how this “gift from the sea” could change your life?

Walking in Their Shoes: The Human Side of the Story

The show focuses on Eduardo, a young fisherman portrayed by Jose Condessa, and his close gang of friends. It is not purely to get the kick, it is all about hope, fear, and the instinct level of decision that one will make each next day when they come upon the drugs. You can see with these characters their eyes, their humor, their loyalty, their mischief, and, most importantly, their lack of idea on what to do next with what is happening to them.

The thoughts that crossed my mind were, why did he do that, or could I have done something better? It is what makes a good drama good: it sucks you in, makes you curious, and does not leave you alone. All the cast, whether the main cast or supporting cast members, feel like real people playing out their roles, and even the children played their roles nicely. When the tension sets in, everything feels real enough, in terms of dialogue as well as the character of interaction between these people.

The Beauty and the Drama: Setting as Storytelling

Now, about the landscape, as you can not help seeing it. The Azores are beautiful, with lush green hills, cliffs, and the constant sea. The camera is dwelling on this scenery, and you get the chilly air and the waves in your sleep. It’s almost like a vacation, if your vacation included a huge moral dilemma and a lot of suspense.

The village is so remote that it increases the pressure. The country is very small, nowhere to go, nowhere to hide. Everybody sees, everybody tells, and every secret finds a means of going out. That community-isolation characterizes all the scenes.

    Not Your Typical Crime Series

Expecting car chases, gun fights, or a poster boy who has all the right answers, you will be surprised. It is not a Hollywood thriller. It is suspenseful as cultures get to see mere mortals tangling up in something well beyond their capabilities. The show allows you to have time and experience the burden of every choice and the gradual execution of punishment.

That pace may not suit everybody. When it comes time to get going and move the action along, there are times when you will find that you want to speed things along. However, if you like shows where you get to live with the characters, where you wait for the payoff, you will have a lot to enjoy.

    Watching Across Borders

One of my favorite things about “Turn of the Tide” is that it is both familiar and unexpected. Even though it is set in Portugal, the themes of greed, friendship, fear, and wanting more are universal. If you aren’t used to subtitles, it might take some getting used to because most of the dialogue is in Portuguese, with some Italian and English used. However, in all honesty, after a few episodes, the emotion is evident, and you barely notice it.

The show’s international popularity speaks for itself. It hit the Netflix global top ten for non-English series, with millions of hours streamed worldwide. That’s a big deal for a series from a place most people couldn’t find on a map.

    What’s Coming Next?

With a second season launching October 17, 2025, and a third already filmed, the story is far from over. In season two, Eduardo comes back to a barely recognizable village. Old friends have become rivals, power has shifted, and the stakes are higher than ever. New actors join the cast, adding fresh twists to the drama.

Will the village ever be the same? Will Eduardo and his friends find a way out, or are they in too deep? Only time will tell, but I’m tuning in to find out.

Who Should Give This Show a Try?

The first thing I adore about Turn of the Tide is that, as much as it is familiar, it is also unexpected. Of course, it takes place in Portugal, but the themes are universal: greed, friendship, fear, and the need to want something more. It is a Portuguese language film with a hint of Italian and English here and there, and that may not be easy to get used to, especially when you are not used to subtitles. But in reality, after a couple of episodes, you virtually forget the subtitle, and the emotion comes through.

    So, Should You Watch?

Here’s my take: Give it a shot. Watch a couple of episodes, see if the village and its people pull you in. If you find yourself wondering what you’d do in their place, or just wanting to spend a little more time in their world, you’ll know you’re hooked.

The series “Turn of the Tide” is not just another crime drama. It immerses you in a storyline that is realistic and characters who remain memorable. Sometimes, not all the most interesting things are about some superhero or detective, but about the people whom you would have encountered in a small fishing village had you ever been washed up on the windswept shore of the Atlantic. It is a story of when the magic is placed on a normal doorstep. And what do you think? Are you ready to be on board with Eduardo and the crew surfing the tide? It will be interesting to see what it brings to them and us in the future.
