He was raised by religious parents and completed his B.A. in biblical studies from Wheaton College in 1957. Then, he went on to pursue his M.A. in Christian education in 1961. He completed his Ph.D. in biblical studies at Louisiana Baptist University in 2004.

Bill Gothard and IBLP

Gothard started an organization called Campus Teams in 1961. Its name was changed to Institute in Basic Youth Conflicts (IBYC) in 1974 and to Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP) in 1989. In the meantime, he also founded a homeschooling program, called Advanced Training Institute in 1984.

The bio on his organization’s website states that Bill focused on “helping teenagers and their parents make wise choices.” It also states that he shared the principles of Christianity with “inner-city gangs in Chicago, church youth groups, high school clubs, youth camps, and families in crisis.”

He stepped down as the president of IBLP in 2014. But, what happened to Bill Gothard? Actually, his decision came after over 30 women accused the evangelist of sexual harassment. After an internal investigation, IBLM stated that no criminal activity took place. However, Gothard acted in an inappropriate manner. In a since-deleted statement, he admitted and apologized for “holding of hands, hugs, and touching of feet or hair with young ladies.”

He clarified that his intentions were never sexual but “crossed the boundaries of discretion…and violated a trust.”
