The director of Parasite, one of the highest-grossing films in South Korea, surprised the audience at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Bong Joon-Ho shared the first trailer for Mickey 17, which stars Robert Pattinson as a character who dies several times in the movie.
Notably, this is the first we have heard of it in a long time, with the Mickey 17 teaser released in December 2022.
The trailer, however, was not shared elsewhere after its CinemaCon release. The movie was initially slated to release on March 29, 2024, but its premiere date was shifted to 2025.
Bong Joon-ho, the Academy Award-winning director, described Mickey 17’s storyline as a
story about a simple man who ultimately ends up saving the world. It’s a strange type of hero’s journey.
Interestingly, the upcoming film will be based on the 2022 sci-fi novel Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton. However, Bong Joon-Ho has decided to change the 7 in the novel to 17 in the movie. 7 is the number of times that the protagonist dies in the story. Thus, it is expected that Bong will kill Pattinson’s character 17 times.
Variety reported that before the premiere of the Mickey 17 trailer, Bong said,
I’m happy we can show the trailer on a big screen — and not on mobile phones.
Reportedly, the trailer opens with Pattinson applying for a job to be sent to colonize an ice planet. It shocks the company members, as no one desires to do such a job.
The company secretary shares with Mickey that they will print a new version of him if he dies.
“Our entire life is a god-damn punishment,” Pattinson’s character says to himself in the trailer. The two-minute clip surprises everyone when a replacement Mickey is seen on screen without the death of the first one. Yes, you guessed it right. Pattinson faces his duplicate in Mickey 17.
He tells his duplicate,
I don’t like you, but I’m you. I’m going to kill you.
Robert Pattinson gained fame after portraying Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga. Moreover, he also played Bruce Wayne/Batman in the 2022 film The Batman.
