Can You Use PayPal On Amazon? Complete Guide

If you’re figuring out whether you can pay for your Amazon purchases using PayPal in the U.S., you’re not alone, and the answer may surprise you. Amazon overtly states that PayPal as a mode of payment is ‘not accepted’ by it. On its official website, Amazon has listed ‘PayPal’ among the methods that are not acceptable for Amazon purchases. That said, it’s pretty clear that you can not check out directly using PayPal. But still, there’s a way to pay with PayPal on Amazon.

In this blog, we will explore what ‘PayPal balance via a Debit Card’ is all about and scheme the best ways to spend your PayPal money on shopping on Amazon. We will also understand why this different PayPal arrangement was made in the first place.

    The Amazon vs PayPal Reality

Amazon’s official ‘Payments Methods We Don’t Accept’ lists PayPal (Venmo transfers and others) among payment options that can’t be exercised. Amazon expects its US customers to pay via credit/ debit card, Amazon store card, gift cards, checking accounts, and other listed methods of payment.

Why is Amazon Not Accepting PayPal Payments?

Amazon and PayPal are competing payment ecosystems. Which means that the decision not to accept PayPal as their direct payment option is not a technical issue but actually a business strategy. Amazon is strongly building its own payment web. Another historical fact states that PayPal was previously tied to eBay, Amazon’s longtime rival. This also made Amazon and PayPal’s direct integration strategically less appealing.

Why is Amazon Not Accepting PayPal Payments?

Amazon wants to stand tall as a competing payment solution. Introducing things like Amazon Pay, Amazon-branded credit cards, and well-optimized in-house checkout systems, which avoid third-party transaction fees and help retain customer data. Amazon aspires to keep its customers within its ecosystem.

Moreover, the company is able to gain more control over its consumer data, transactional data, refunds, fraud management, and cross-selling when payments do not involve third-party platforms. This is why Amazon does not bring back PayPal even in 2026 despite customer demand. There was a similar incident when Amazon struck an integration. Venmo was added for a brief time and later was removed.

Ways You Can Use PayPal on Amazon

The following are different ways to work around how to use PayPal for Amazon purchases. Though all these methods take advantage of the company’s alternative payment methods. You can use PayPal by:

    1. PayPal Debit Card (Business Debit Mastercard)

If you have a PayPal balance and a PayPal debit card/ business debit Mastercard, it can work as one of your Amazon payment methods and be used at checkout. PayPal’s own help pages can guide you through how to use a debit card ‘anywhere Mastercard is accepted,’ which includes Amazon as well.

Steps to get a PayPal Debit Card

    • Sign in to your PayPal account & apply for the PayPal Debit Card (personal or business variant)
    • Activate the card
    • Add card to Amazon (Your account → Payment options → Add a card)
    • Select card at checkout

    2. Buy Amazon eGift Cards with PayPal

You can purchase Amazon eGift Cards from the PayPal Digital Gifts storefront or from any other reputable PayPal-supported online store retailing gift cards. After purchasing, receive an email code and redeem it on Amazon. This is one way of using your PayPal funds to pay for Amazon purchases.

Steps to Buy Amazon eGift Cards with PayPal

    • Go to PayPal Digital Gifts (or any genuine reseller that accepts PayPal)
    • Buy an Amazon eGift code using PayPal
    • Redeem the code on Amazon (Accounts → Gift cards)
    • Use the gift balance at checkout

    3. PayPal Key

You could use PayPal’s virtual card service called PayPal Key (PayPal-generated Mastercard number), which even Amazon accepts as it accepts Mastercard. Though PayPal Key is no more in service since 2022, making it no longer an option. If any blog mentions it as a payment method on Amazon, it’s outdated.

    Steps to use PayPal

    • You can buy a prepaid Mastercard from some card sellers with PayPal. Later, you can add those card details to Amazon. (fees & activation rules apply)

    4. Venmo

Venmo (owned by PayPal) was added as a payment option in late 2022 for some consumers. But later, Amazon announced Venmo transfers to be stopped on January 10, 2024. Therefore, even Venmo is no longer a reliable on-platform substitute to PayPal for Amazon deals. Though cards may work.

Recommended Methods to Use PayPal Money on Amazon

    • The simplest and most effective way for a regular Amazon buyer with PayPal funds is to apply for a PayPal debit card and add it to Amazon.
    • For occasional buyers, Amazon eGift Card using PayPal Digital Gifts, or a reputable reseller, and redeeming the code is a good option.
    • Avoid referring to PayPal Key methods; it’s no longer in use.
    • Keep a track of your PayPal balance & any holds or pending transactions before ordering in large quantities on Amazon.

PayPal on Amazon – Fees, Limits & Glitches

    1. Card rules & declines

Amazon views PayPal Debit Card as any other Mastercard. Your Amazon purchases may fail if PayPal declines the underlying funding. Make sure to have enough PayPal balance before making large purchases.

    2. Third-party seller limits

Not all third-party sellers are equally trustworthy. Be aware of shady resellers who might delay delivery or sell you invalid codes for your Amazon eGift Cards using PayPal.

    3. PayPal Key & Venmo transactions

PayPal’s virtual currency methods and Venmo transfers have long been disabled as payment methods on Amazon. Refrain from outdated blogs suggesting them as a mode of payment. Venmo cards are still working.

Quick FAQs on PayPal vs Amazon

    1. Can I link PayPal to Amazon similarly to the way bank accounts are linked?
No. Amazon does not accept PayPal as a linked payment method for direct checkout.

    2. Does Amazon accept Venmo?
No. Venmo transfers are removed from Amazon checkout. Venmo cards are still used as a regular payment method.

    3. Does a PayPal Debit Card charge extra fees?
Amazon does not charge extra for debit/ credit card usage. But check PayPal’s terms and conditions for applicable fees & ATM or foreign transaction regulations.

Using Multicurrency to Pay on Amazon

Wise (formerly TransferWise) is a money services business registered with U.S. regulators like FinCEN. You can leverage Wise as a payment option on Amazon by adding your Wise Debit Card (Mastercard or Visa) directly. It supports multicurrency payments with lower conversion fees as compared to PayPal. It’s an ideal choice for international Amazon sites like Amazon UK, Germany, or Japan. Wise can automatically convert your USD money into the local currency using its mid-market rates. PayPal has no involvement with Wise, but you can use it on Amazon by manually transferring funds from PayPal to Wise.

Wrapping up, PayPal is one of the largest payment methods used across the U.S., but surprisingly, Amazon no longer allows it to be a mode of payment on its site. There are several alternative methods to use your PayPal funds on Amazon purchases, which I have discussed above. I have suggested a way to leverage multiple currencies on Amazon. As of now, PayPal is no longer a direct mode of payment on Amazon, but we don’t know if it can be in the future, as removing PayPal wasn’t a technical limitation but a strategically planned business move.
