Car expenses are a significant problem for many people across the globe, but particularly in developed countries. The costs just seem to continue going up with no end in sight.

Fortunately, there are many ways you can still save money. It just requires a bit of planning on your behalf.

So, what do you need to do?

    Consider Carpooling

The best way to reduce your car costs is to join a carpooling scheme. With these, you make use of your vehicle for things like ridesharing and commuting to work with colleagues. Often, you can spread the costs three or four ways over several months so you’re not responsible for all the bills yourself. Cutting down on driving also makes wear and tear and fuel costs go lower, and might qualify you for low-mileage discounts.

Previously, these sorts of arrangements were hard to organize. However, modern apps and platforms make it simpler and give you more options to explore. It’s well worth a try if you’ve tried everything else.

    Buy Used Parts

You can also reduce your car costs quite substantially by buying used parts. Opting for refurbished items instead of brand new equipment can be a great way to lower the overall fees you pay.

Obviously, repairing your vehicle with used parts seems like a compromise, and it is. But these days, there are so many trusted dealers and online marketplaces where you can find perfectly functional items that it doesn’t make much of a difference. Thirty years ago, using used parts might have been a problem, but that’s no longer the case today.

    Embrace Preventative Maintenance

At the same time, it is well worth investing in preventative maintenance. Just like with the human body, applying this principle to your vehicle can lower your costs substantially.

For example, don’t put off things like tire rotations and oil changes. Dealing with these regularly can lower the amount you find yourself paying long-term.

If you want to turn it into an exact science, check your owner’s manual. This will show you when the manufacturer suggests carrying out specific tasks (usually as a result of extensive in-house testing). You can also go on forums and ask fellow drivers what they recommend, and what works in their experience.

    Drive Smarter

Another approach is to simply drive smarter and use that as a way to save fuel. A lot of motorists put the pedal to the metal every time the lights turn green, but this isn’t a great way to make transport more economical.

The trick is to use smooth acceleration. Gently dabbing the gas is more likely to help you achieve the vehicle’s rated mileage.

You also want to avoid idling, another significant issue in many cities. Not only is it bad for air quality, but it can also burn through gas quickly with no return.

Therefore, enable the stop-start feature on your vehicle, or turn the engine off when it isn’t in use. Little changes like this can reduce your gas bill by up to 20%.

Finally, it’s worth planning your trips using tools like GasBuddy. These apps help you find the cheapest fuel along the way, so you always know where to stop. You don’t want to get caught at an overpriced highway gas station simply because you don’t have any other options.

    Scan For Cheaper Car Insurance

You also want to scan for the cheapest car insurance you can find. These days, prices are rising, so it is always worth taking a good look around to see what’s out there.

As you do your research, you will soon discover that the market isn’t perfectly competitive. Many insurers offer far lower prices than others, giving you more options and allowing you to reduce monthly outgoings related to your vehicle.

You may also be able to find cheap insurance if you tailor it to your requirements. You may find that there are a bunch of add-ons you don’t actually need, so avoiding these could potentially save you a lot of money in the long run. The same logic applies to extended warranty coverage — make sure you’re only paying for what you truly need, not unnecessary extras.

    Maintain Your Vehicle Yourself

Another option for cutting costs is to maintain your vehicle yourself. Learning the basics can often save you a lot of money (and you’ll take the skills with you for life).

For example, you might want to learn how to change out wiper blades or top off fluids. Garages will charge a lot of money for these services, even though they are exceptionally simple.

Plus, it’s a small effort on your behalf. You don’t actually have to do much. Usually, it takes around 10 minutes to learn a lot of these vehicle maintenance skills, and once you know what to do, they stick with you for life.

    Track Your Vehicle Spending

Finally, it can help you track your vehicle spending. Using a budgeting app will tell you how much it is costing to run your vehicle every month, so you can keep tabs on your outgoings month after month.

These apps work similarly to most business apps, allowing you to get a breakdown of how much your car is costing you every month, and what that means for your pocketbook. You can see what you’re spending on gas and how much maintenance is setting you back.

Once you have this information, you can then see where your money is going and whether you are spending it how you want. Expenses can be quite high on some vehicles, but much lower on others, so you may want to track different rates to see whether it is worth changing your ride.

Hopefully, these ideas have given you some encouragement, and you feel like you can now get your car expenses under control. Naturally, it is a challenging process, and you will sometimes need to cut back, but it is also worth it if your vehicle is preventing you from achieving the financial freedom you want.

Cars don’t necessarily have to be expensive these days, but that depends on which vehicle you choose and where you decide to use it.
