After graduating from high school, Rodman took a job as an overnight janitor at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Despite feeling socially awkward due to the dramatic change in his own body, Rodman decided to give basketball another attempt.

Rodman was eligible for the 1986 NBA draft and chosen by the Detroit Pistons as their third pick in round two (27th overall). The team was famously known as “Bad Boys” due to its aggressive playing style. Chuck Daly served as the head coach for the team back then. Isiah Thomas and Joe Dumars held down the guard positions. Adrian Dantley and Sidney Green played forward. Bill Laimbeer anchored the centre court.

During the 1987-88 season, Rick Mahorn, Vinnie Johnson, and John Salley played more than 15 minutes per game as sixth men. Coming off the bench himself, Dennis Rodman was an integral part of this team. He provided 6.5 points and 4.7 rebounds and proved to be a reliable defender in only 15 minutes each night on average.

During his 14-year career in the NBA, Rodman’s impressive numbers spoke for themselves. Across 911 games, he scored an average of 7.3 points and 13.1 rebounds per game with only 31.7 minutes played each game — totaling 6,683 points and 11,954 rebounds throughout his entire tenure.
