After graduating from high school, Rodman took a job as an overnight janitor at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. It was during this period that he experienced an unexpected growth spurt from 5 ft 11 in (1.80 m) to 6 ft 7 in (2.01 m). Despite feeling socially awkward due to the dramatic change in his own body, Rodman decided to give basketball another attempt.
Rodman was eligible for the 1986 NBA draft and chosen by the Detroit Pistons as their third pick in round two (27th overall).
