Netflix’s crime thriller series, Dept. Q season 2 release is officially announced. The series is based on Jussi Adler-Olsen’s book, Department Q. If you are a crime-thriller show lover, add this one to your watch list. The series was first premiered on Netflix on May 29, 2025, and drew massive viewership, ranking seventh among Netflix’s top series in its second week.

After this immense success of season 1, many crime show fans started asking for the release date for the second season of Dept. Q.

Let’s take a look at what we know so far about the release date, cast, trailer, and more details about the crime TV series with the help of this blog.

When Will Dept. Q Season 2 Release?

After getting remarkable success from season one, Netflix has renewed the crime drama after 3 months of release on 18 August, 2025. During the renewal of the series, Matthew Goode, who played the character of DCI Carl Morck, said, ‘I’d like to thank Netflix for allowing us to further investigate Dept. Q’s storylines.’

What we know right now is that filming for the second season will start post-spring. The official release date for the upcoming season of Dept. Q is not officially announced by Netflix. Some source suggests the release by the end of 2026 or early 2027. Till then, you need to wait, and if you haven’t watched season 1, then this is the best time to binge-watch the show with your loved ones.

Is the Trailer for Dept. Q Season 2 is Out?

The trailer for the upcoming season of Dept. Q is not out. However, there are many fake trailer videos available on YouTube. But the official trailer for season 2 is not out. You can expect it around 4-5 weeks before the actual release. If you haven’t watched the previous season of Dept. Q, then watch the trailer before starting with a brand new series.

Where Does Dept. Q Season 1 Ended?

The first season of Dept. Q mainly follows a talented and emotional detective, Carl Morck. After he survives a tragic shooting incident, the department assigns him as the sole officer to lead a new team of detectives and uncover the mysteries behind unsolved cases. The department also assigns him a basement office, which used to be a bathroom, for his work. Season 1 revolves around a prosecutor, Merritt Lingard, who has been missing for over a year. The new team is made to solve the older unsolved cases to gain public support for the police force. Carl and his team decided to open and try to solve the case of the prosecutor, who most people believe is impossible to solve.

After digging deeper, they came to know that she had been kidnapped and held captive for years. In the last episode, Morck and his team locate Merritt and rescue her. The story gave a conclusion to the prosecutor’s case. However, the personal emotional trauma and past are still lingering on Carl. This is the reason why people were asking for the second season of Dept. Q.

What to Expect for The Plot of Season 2?

At the final episode of season 1, Carl and his team solved the missing case of Merritt from the years of captivity by the Jennings family. The case was closed after rescuing the prosecutor and catching the culprit. However, one case doesn’t resolve all the cold cases of Department Q.

The upcoming season will reveal other unsolved or ignored cases. These cold cases will expose more shocking secrets with more complex and intense scenes.

This season also highlights the Leith Park case. A tragic attack kills a police officer. Morck believes the shooting was not random. He suspects the gangster Eugene Errington is involved.
Season 2 of the series will be based on another book by Jussi Adler-Olsen. The show could adapt one possible plot from the novel The Absent One, which follows an old double murder connected to a wealthy boarding school student.
