Joseph Christian Chestnut was born on November 25, 1983 (age 39 years; as of 2022) in  Fulton County, Kentucky, United States; he was brought up by his parents in Vallejo, California. After completing his A levels, Joey pursued an engineering and construction management degree from San Jose State University, California. Born in a middle-class family, Joey’s father, Merlin Chestnut, left them when Joey was two. Joey’s mother, Alicia Chestnut, is an actress. He started his journey as a professional eater when he was pursuing his undergraduate degree and won his first eating competition when he was a second-year university student.

Career

Fond of eating since childhood, Chestnut developed his talent for eating large amounts of food when travelling home to visit family during college. According to Joey, his younger brother influenced him to participate in his first eating competition which was a lobster-eating competition. Joey recalled his first experience participating in an eating contest and said,

He signed me up for my first contest…I really didn’t want to do it, but I only went to the first contest because I was 21 years old and the organizer offered him a free hotel room.”

Later, in 2007, Joey participated in Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest, which was initially dominated by Japanese contestants; Joey claimed his first title in 2007 when he ended the reign of 6-time champion, Takeru Kobayashi. Following his first victory, Joey went on to become the most decorated champion of all time winning the next 11 out of the 12 years.

Although Joey holds various world records in eating competitions, he had to face various health issues and discomfort after participating in a contest. Joey, during an interview, talked about his experience and said,

By the time I get back to the hotel, I’m just dead tired and so sticky from sweat. Yeah, grease is starting to come out of me. Really, even after I shower and I started sweating again, I smell like a hot dog. So, my night isn’t the best, but I’m happy. It’s weird. I love feeling like garbage sometimes.”
