With spreading protests and no sign of public anger easing, Nepal’s Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli had the only choice: to step down from the position. He took over on July 15, 2024, his fourth term in office, backed by the Nepal Congress Party.

What triggered this escalation of public anger and the Prime Minister’s resignation in Nepal?

In early September 2025, social platforms like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, and others failed to follow the registration deadline with the Nepali government. In response, there was a major ban on approximately 26 social media platforms. The government claimed it was a necessary step to curb misinformation, fake accounts, and hate speech.

The ban was effective from September 04, prohibiting the function of all the major social media apps in Nepal. Though TikTok and Viber remained accessible as they complied with the registration requirements.

On September 08, Gen Z youth came out in front to protest against the ban. The youth’s anger is not just aimed at the ban, but also at the government’s undermining of democracy and increasing corruption. The protesters shouted slogans, “Shut down corruption, not social media.”

A 26-year-old boy, Satish Mandal, said he is protesting against the corruption:

“Nepal is being corrupted day by day. In every sector, especially in health & education, corruption is increasing. Students are being killed by police… We would like to request that the government of Nepal stand down.”

There are persistent attacks on high-profile politicians and their residential spaces are being vandalised, including the properties of PM Oli and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba. Party headquarters are being targeted, too.

The executive director of Civil Service Hospital, Mohan Regmi, said that at least two people have died during Tuesday’s protest, and 90 are currently being treated.

Nepal Prime Minister Oli resigned on 9 September, Tuesday afternoon local time, and stated his resignation as a constitutional solution amid public outrage since early morning in the capital Kathmandu and across the country.

Latest Updates on the Current Situation in Nepal

There is a feeling of victory among protestors after the Prime Minister’s resignation.

Agricultural and Livestock Minister Ram Nath Adhikari and Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak have submitted their resignations too.

Armed police fired rubber bullets, used water cannons and tear gas, which has led to the death of 19 people, leaving dozens injured.

The Minister of Water Supply also had to put his papers down amid the ongoing public unrest.

Domestic flights at Kathmandu’s International Airport are nearly halted, due to security concerns, according to Nepal’s aviation authority.
