On November 30, 2022, Christine McVie breathed her last at the age of 79 and left a legacy that will continue to awe and inspire generations of musicians, singers, and songwriters. Christine’s gift as a singer was superseded only by her talent as a songwriter. Her choruses were the stuff of legend; she could bestow the soppiest of lyrics with unending life. Christine McVie played a seminal part in the making of the greatest era of American pop music, and that is something worth celebrating.

Christine Perfect married Fleetwood Mac bassist John McVie in 1968. When Peter Green left the band in 1970, she was asked to fill in, and all she said was “Yes, please”. Fleetwood Mac got their “Songbird”. The McVie couple separated and got divorced in 1976, and the breakup resulted in one of Fleetwood Mac’s biggest-selling albums Rumours, in 1977, of which 40 million copies were sold worldwide.

Christine McVie had a soulful voice, she was a “power house” on the piano, and she had a knack for writing life-altering pop songs. Her lyrics and melodies were as simple as they get, and yet they somehow avoided being cliches. Her love songs always had a twist that set them apart from the rest. Christine was adept in writing captivating choruses; it came so naturally to her that she could proudly call herself “the hook queen”. She could sing “I love you, I love you, I love you like never before” and mean every word so deeply that it moved the listener from the inside.

After having retired from Fleetwood Mac in 1998, the same year when she, along with 7 other members of Fleetwood Mac, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, owing to her aerophobia (fear of flying), Christine returned on stage in 2013 and joined the fleet again in 2014 for a performance. And it was like she had never left.

Christine McVie died peacefully at the age of 79, having lived a full life. However, her death was a bit of a shocker for former bandmate and lifelong friend Stevie Nicks. She said on Thursday, “A few hours ago, I was told that my best friend in the whole world since the first day of 1975 had passed away.” In a tweet, band co-founder Mick Fleetwood wrote: “This is a day where my dear sweet friend Christine McVie has taken to flight… and left us, earthbound folks to listen with bated breath to the sounds of that songbird…” And we cannot agree more.
