The Sinner is an American crime drama developed by Derek Simonds. It is based on a novel by Petra Hammesfhar of the same name. It features Bill Pullman as Detective Harry Ambrose, who investigates many cases and attempts to find out the reason behind ordinary people committing atrocious crimes. Initially, it was planned as a miniseries, consisting of eight episodes. After the phenomenal success and appreciation it received, the USA Network turned it into a full-fledged series, with four of its seasons airing from August 2, 2017, to December 1, 2021. Bill Pullman remains the only constant in every season, while the rest of the cast mostly changes with each season.

The first season of the title received nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Miniseries or Television Film and Best Actress—Miniseries or Television Film for Jessica Biel. Not only this, Biel also received a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.

What happens in The Sinner?

In the first season of the series, Detective Harry Ambrose tries to analyze the past of Cora Tannetti in an attempt to find out why she committed a murder. In the second season, Ambrose moves to his hometown to find out why a teen boy named Julian Walker poisoned a couple. Moreover, he investigates an accident in New York in The Sinner’s third season. In the fourth season, retired detective Ambrose involves himself in a murder investigation of an influential family’s daughter.

As reported by TV Line, The Sinner will not be back for another season. The network renewed the first four seasons annually. However, during the fourth season’s airing, they announced the cancellation of the show. Derek Simonds, the series creator, stated,

It’s been a huge pleasure and a privilege to be able to tell the kind of stories we have on The Sinner these past four seasons.

He added,

[Universal Content Productions] and USA have been ideal partners and continually supportive of our creative goals, and I’m so pleased to complete Harry Ambrose’s dramatic series-long arc as we intended in this final season. A huge thank you to my partner-in-crime, Bill Pullman, and to the talented actors, writers, directors, and crew who gave their all to help realize this show. It’s been an incredible journey.

The Sinner Season 5 Release Date

As mentioned previously in the article, season 5 was canceled by USA Network, and the show did not land on any other platform after that. However, we are still hopeful of its return if some streamer, mainly Netflix, decides to save it. Notably, Netflix has saved many shows that were initially canceled, such as Lucifer. Moreover, it could also release a spinoff or sequel for the same. Interestingly, The Sinner is currently streaming on Netflix, and it might get a spinoff after reaching a certain watch time.
