Before Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok, there was Myspace. Many of us remember it as one of the most popular social media sites. It was established in 2003 and was the most famous social platform at that time. Many stars, including Lady Gaga, used it to become famous on YouTube.

It allowed users to personalise their profiles and create unique ones according to their preferences. You were allowed to customize your profile by adding songs, sharing real-life events with the ability to connect to people worldwide. This blog is about Myspace’s origin, journey, and reason for its failure. We will also discuss questions like, Is Myspace still around? Let’s find out.

    What Was Myspace?

Myspace was different from today’s social platforms. It allowed users to make their profiles unique. Users were not limited to a simple design. It gave access to several features to its users. The site was developed by Tom Anderson and Chris De Wolfe. Tom became known to many as he was the default friend for all the new users.

    What Was Myspace?

Myspace was used by many people to connect with friends. It was also popular among musicians who liked to share their songs. It served as a place for people to express themselves through their profiles.

    The Early Rise and Success

Myspace was launched in the early 2000s. It didn’t get recognized very instantly, but sooner loved by many because of its customizable features. By 2005, its popularity had grown and become a well-recognized name with around 20 million users, and was valued at $580 million by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation.

    Why Did Myspace Shut Down?

Many wonder, “Why did Myspace shut down?” The truth is, it never fully shut down, but started losing its magic after 2007. The site grew messy and slow. Ads piled up, making browsing annoying. At the same time, Facebook appeared with a cleaner look and a smarter design.

Facebook’s focus on real friends and simpler experience won over users. It was simpler and easier for us. Upon passing time, Myspace’s technical glitches and slow response pages have resulted in a divided audience. The app didn’t overcome its problems; instead, it focused on more ads, which eventually caused it to lose its reach.

The Failed Sale and Financial Trouble

By 2011, Myspace was on shaky ground. News Corp tried selling it to Veoh Networks, but the sale didn’t happen. Instead, in a big loss, it was sold for only $35 million to Specific Media and pop star Justin Timberlake. That’s a huge drop from the $580 million a few years earlier. They tried to revive it as a music site, but it never returned to its glory days.

    How Did Facebook Overtake Myspace?

Facebook launched a year later in 2004, but played things differently. Starting with college students, it gradually opened to everyone. Its simple, clean design felt intuitive. The News Feed was a game-changer, all updates in one place, easy to follow.

By 2008, Facebook had more visitors worldwide than Myspace. Facebook’s fresh approach won people over, while Myspace’s appeal faded. By 2009, Facebook was the number one social network in the US, cementing its place at the top.

    Why Did Myspace Shut Down?

Is Myspace Still Around? Does It Still Exist?

The answer is yes, but it just exists. It displays features like people, songs, and videos, but so many useful and simple tools are available in the market that hardly anyone uses Myspace. Now it serves as an artist-oriented platform for sharing songs and videos. Though millions still visit, it’s a small corner of the internet now. A 2019 server problem deleted much of its history, which lowered its comeback chances to zero.

Stats and Legacy: The Rise and Fall of Myspace

Myspace’s peak was unforgettable. In 2008, it wowed the internet with 115 million monthly users. It was where millions socialized and discovered music. In 2006, it even topped Google visits in the U.S., showing its massive popularity. In the same year, it earned over $800 million.

However, change came fast. By 2009, Facebook’s popularity had reached users worldwide because of its cleaner design and better user experience. Myspace’s user base got divided as it struggled to keep up.

In 2011, Myspace was sold for just $35 million, down from hundreds of millions. Once the most popular site left with around 7 million visitors by 2019. Making it no longer a giant site. It didn’t stay longer, but it has taught us that it is important to adapt to new things, or else we will fade away in this competitive, vast market.

    Does Myspace Still Exist?

    Does Myspace Still Exist

This question is raised in many people’s minds. Is Myspace still around? Once a revolution that connected people across the globe, but due to its limitations, it lost all its worth. It tried a different path to stay in the market, but slowly it completely lost its audience. It still exists on the internet, but it rarely gets any search traffic. Myspace is alive and still has videos, songs, features, and people options. Its music is sponsored by iLike. But the availability of more reliable and easy platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok has caused its downfall. Myspace is a story of fall and rise; it is a reminder that you need to keep moving to stay in the business.
