5 Easy Ways to Save Money on Groceries

5 Easy Ways to Save Money on Groceries

Groceries are a necessary living expense, but the rising prices are a concern for many people. It can be difficult to get the food your body needs to thrive when the prices are so exorbitant. However, there are some easy ways to save money on groceries that you can use to keep your wallet a little more full after you’ve made your purchase.

Plan Out Your Food Budget

Part of managing money to improve your finances means planning out a budget. In terms of saving on groceries, having a specific food budget to follow can help. For one month, keep the receipts of all the food you buy. After that, add up all the totals and see what it is that you’re really spending each month on groceries. Do you eat out too much? Do you tend to over shop at certain times? See how much you spend and set that as your budget to follow, and then work on ways to fall under that amount, so you have money left over, rather than going above the amount and putting yourself in debt.

Eat Healthy on a Budget By Clipping Coupons

Coupons are often sent in the mail from various local stores. When these arrive in your mailbox, don’t overlook them. Clip the coupons for foods you enjoy or want to add to your diet, and you can save some money on the expensive prices you’re seeing in stores. When you’re planning on eating healthy on a budget, using whatever coupons you can find is extremely helpful. You can also visit store websites and look at coupon sites like Groupon to try and find additional deals.

Purchase Store Brands

With the price of food rising so significantly, it may be time to switch from name brands to store brands. Between August 2021 and August 2022, the price of eggs went up by nearly 40%. The cost of cereal and milk rose by nearly 17%. With such a huge increase, it may be difficult to stick with the same brands you were buying before. Switching to a store brand with a lesser cost will help you avoid such a drastic difference and help keep your total closer to what it used to be.

Bring Your Own Bags

It may not seem like much, but if you’re shopping at a store like Aldi or Save a Lot that requires you to purchase plastic or canvas bags to hold your goods, it can add up. Bringing your own bags from home each time you shop at these places saves you the cost of buying the store’s bags. It can help save several dollars or more if you’re purchasing quite a few every time you visit.

Enroll in a Grocery Rewards Program

Nowadays, there are numerous credit cards available that offer rewards for purchases. Enroll in a grocery rewards program that helps you earn cash back or save on costs at the store. Some of the best rewards cards include Chase Freedom Unlimited, Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards, and Discover it Cash Back. If you tend to purchase groceries online, such as from Amazon, then their rewards card would work well for you.

Saving money on groceries, or on any goods and services, ensures you have more to spend on the things you want and have more money left when the end of the month comes around. Always be on the lookout for good deals and find ways to save so you can enjoy more things, or start a savings account that will help you out should hard times arrive down the line.
