Jon Iver Helgaker and Jonas Torgersen, the creators of Norsemen, had imagined Captain Fall as a live action series. But Netflix thought it would be better off as a cartoon. So, we’ll have an absurdist cartoon series. In an interview the creators said, “It’s like if The Love Boat, Ozark, and The Truman Show had a cartoon baby.” Netflix has published the official trailer for Captain Fall.
Netflix passed a 20 episode order for the show back in July 2020. They surrounded the creators with top notch cartoon experts to help them make the transition between live action and cartoon. Notably, Norsemen was a live action show that ran for three seasons. Finally, Captain Fall is debuting on Netflix on July 28th, 2023. 10 episodes of the show will be available to stream each episode being around 26 minutes in length. The second batch of episodes will be released at a later date.
The 2-D animation on Captain Fall is inspired by films like The Iron Giant and the “linge Claire” drawing style pioneered by the Belgian comic artist Hergé, the creator of “The Adventures of Tintin”. Joel Trussell, Jon Iver Helgaker, and Jonas Torgensen are serving as executive producers of the show.

Captain Fall is about a gullible young Naval officer who passes the Naval academy exam with the worst grades in history but lands a job in a cruise ship. Little does he know that a cartel is trying to pose him as the fall guy for anything that goes wrong during their operations. The trailer opens with an action sequence where kids dressed as naval officers are tased and beaten. It gives you the absurdist feel right off the bat. It then delves into snippets of the life of Jonathon Fall and the huge mess he’s unwittingly become a part of.
