Last week, the Employment Tribunal in the United Kingdom found in favour of a Christian nurse who claimed she was forced to leave from her employment at a London hospital after being harassed for years because of her cross necklace. After leaving in June 2020, Mary Onuoha, christian nurse filed a lawsuit against Croydon Health Services NHS Trust after years of being harassed for wearing a little cross necklace that was deemed a “health and safety concern.” After she refused to take off her necklace, NHS management offered her a compromise: she could wear it on a longer chain to hide the cross, but she also declined.

“For the past 40 years, I’ve carried a cross with me. It’s a part of who I am and what I believe, and it’s never caused anyone any damage. Patients frequently tell me, “I really appreciate your cross,” and they always reply positively, which brings me joy and makes me feel good. I am glad to wear it because I know how much God loves me and went to such lengths for me “she went on.

THe result of the christian nurse case
The panel disregarded the hospital’s allegation about the health danger in its verdict last Wednesday, noting that other staff are permitted to wear hijabs and jewellery.
The panel stated, “There is no evidence to suggest that the infection risk they posed was lower than the Cross-Necklace.” “There’s no good reason why these products are allowed but a lovely necklace with a little pendant of religious devotional value isn’t.”
“From the start, this case has been about the NHS bureaucracy’s bullying of a dedicated and hardworking nurse’s right to wear a cross, the world’s most widely known and treasured sign of Christian religion. The Tribunal’s recognition of this fact is quite encouraging.” At a subsequent hearing, Onuoha’s financial compensation will be decided.
