Halo's Unannounced Battle Royale Game Has Reportedly Been Scrapped

A new report that has recently surfaced online claims that Xbox has canceled an upcoming Halo franchise game. Since the run of Bungie ended around a decade ago, 343 Industries, the video game developer, has been the largest part of Xbox games, having developed games like Halo 4, Halo 5, and Halo Infinite. After the failure of Halo Infinite, it seemed like the future of 343 Industries was over, but it partnered up with Certain Affinity to develop a new Halo game, as revealed by the latter in a tweet from 2022. However, after about two years, new reports have started revealing that the project has been discarded.

In September 2022, the president and COO of Certain Affinity, Paul Sams, said in an interview, “The biggest thing we’re doing that’s public right now, for more than two years now we’ve been working on Halo Infinite doing something that–they’re very prescriptive about what we can say. But we’re doing something unannounced, and we’re doing lead development on that unannounced thing, from conception and design.” He added, “It’s something big and new for the franchise. But I can’t say any more about it. That’s our single largest project of our three projects currently. We have close to 100 developers working on that.” That was the last time that the developers’ team mentioned this Halo Battle Royale game.

In a recent episode of the XboxEra Podcast, its co-founder, Nick Baker, revealed that his sources have confirmed that this Halo franchise game, which was being developed collaboratively by Certain Affinity and 343 Industries, has been entirely canceled. According to some rumors, the game was code-named Tatanka and was supposed to be a battle royale game with the Halo universe theme. The Xbox community has been pretty excited about this game; however, it seems like they will never get to play it.
