Kate Winslet has once again reminisced about some moments from her 1997 all-time-hit movie Titanic. While rewatching some of the most iconic scenes of the movie in a Vanity Fair video, the 48-year-old Oscar-winning actress shared how kissing DiCaprio was so messy.
“My god, he’s quite the romancer, isn’t he? No wonder every young girl in the world wanted to be kissed by Leonardo DiCaprio,” Winslet joked. “It was not all it’s cracked up to be.”
She explained how the duo kept repeating the kissing scene while also ensuring that their makeup was on point. The Finding Neverland actress said, “We kept doing this kiss, and I’ve got a lot of pale makeup on and I would have to do our makeup checks — on both of us, between takes — and I would end up looking as though I’d been sucking a caramel chocolate bar after each take because his makeup would come off on me.”
Not only this, she recalled how Leonardo started to look like there was something missing from his face due to her pale-colored makeup on him.
“Oh God, it was such a mess.”
In the same video, she also said that it was no less than a nightmare to shoot that particular scene because of the unconventional filming location and lighting issues. She also had to give numerous takes because she kept hitting her knee on the railing.
“Leo couldn’t stop laughing, and we had to reshoot this about four times because [director James Cameron] wanted a very specific light for this, obviously, and the sunsets kept changing where we were,” Kate said.
“This was a section of the ship, it wasn’t part of the actual whole ship set that we had,” Winslet continued. “We had to climb up a ladder to get to it. Hair and makeup couldn’t reach us. Now, what you wouldn’t know because Leo looks completely natural but he had to lie on sunbeds and there’s a lot of fake tan makeup going on.”
Since it was the need of the hour, she had makeup brushes and other related stuff to redo their makeup. Kate recalled how funny it was that she hid brushes and makeup in her dress.
Despite everything that the crew went through behind the cameras, Titanic was a major success. The film won 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
