KPop Demon Hunters 2: Netflix and Sony Join Forces for the Sequel

When Netflix first introduced K-pop Demon Hunters earlier this summer, few could have predicted the audience response. What began as an experimental animated film sold to Netflix by Sony Pictures Animation has now evolved into a pop culture phenomenon. In a very short span of time, the film has shattered records and redefined Netflix’s place in global animation. And now, with talks of a KPoP Demon Hunter season 2, the story of this sensational animated series seems like it’s only just getting started.

    The Record-Breaking Ascent

Netflix’s recent announcement states that KPop Demon Hunters has become the most popular Netflix original movie, beating the previous record held by Red Notice. It is rare to see an animated movie capturing a huge audience in this streaming world.

What’s impressive is that back in 2021, Sony chose to license the film to Netflix for a fee of $25M instead of releasing it in theaters itself.

Seeing the craze among the audience, Netflix even hosted a special limited sing-along event in theaters. And now it has become an animated movie with 236M viewers in just 2 days.

Theatrical SuccessLimited sing-along release in 1,700+ theaters, topped the weekend box office.
Box Office EarningsEstimated $18-20 million over 2-day theatrical run.
Critical Reception97% critic and 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

KPop Demon Hunters: When Music Meets Magic

Part of what sparked this cultural phenomenon is the movie’s soundtrack. Rarely has an animated feature embedded its music so deeply into the global charts. The KPop Demon Hunters Season 1 have made history by placing four songs in the Billboard Hot 100’s Top 10 at the same time.

Songs like Soda Pop and Your Idol, performed by the mischievous Saja Boys in the story, also crossed over into real-world playlists.

When to Expect KPop Demon Hunters 2 Trailer?

Reports confirm that Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix have entered negotiations to map out the continuation. Trailer of KPop Demon Hunters season 2 is expected to be released in 2028 or 2029. It will be released on Netflix in collaboration with Sony.

At the creative level, both Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the directors of the KPop Demon Hunters film, are expected to return. Kang has hinted in multiple interviews that the sequel will broaden its narrative horizons.

The KPop Demon Hunters 1 was largely Rumi’s (Arden Cho) personal journey, but her bandmates Zoey (Ji-young Yoo) and Mira (May Hong) will finally have their own backstories explored. Kang even revealed that early drafts of these plotlines were tested in season 1 but ultimately cut for pacing. The sequel will bring them to the forefront.

Adding fuel to speculation, Arden Cho, the voice of Rumi, hopes that the sequel explores Rumi’s attempt to revive Jinu (Ahn Hyo-seop), who was dead in the last season. In this magical, demon-slaying universe, death itself may prove negotiable. Whether the mischievous Saja Boys make a return remains unconfirmed.

A Business Story Beneath the Fantasy

Behind the fanfare is a fascinating story of business strategy. The KPop Demon Hunters film was funded entirely by Netflix, which covered its $100 million budget and then paid Sony its fee. Sony still enjoys partial earnings from soundtrack revenues and publishing royalties, but it handed over all merchandise rights to Netflix.

Netflix is preparing to launch its in-person store in Philadelphia and Dallas, known as Netflix House, which will have a K-pop Demon Hunter theme for visitors’ experience.

KPop Demon Hunters 2: Netflix and Sony Join Forces for the Sequel

Some industry observers argue that Sony made a mistake letting Netflix scoop up all the rights. Others believe Sony was trying to avoid any risk, considering original animated stories face uphill battles in post-pandemic theaters. Either way, both companies came out winners: Sony profited handsomely without financial risk, while Netflix secured its most powerful animated franchise to date.

    The Future Beyond Demon Slaying

Season 1 is only the beginning. Industry whispers suggest that the next season is likely to launch. Hence, this is not clear from any official source.

What’s clear is that KPop Demon Hunters has become a franchise with storytelling, music, live events, and merchandising potential on a scale Netflix has rarely achieved.

    Closing Thoughts

The rise of KPop Demon Hunters is both improbable and inevitable. Improbable because who would have expected an 85-minute animated K-pop fantasy about slaying demons to outshine celebrity-driven blockbusters? Inevitable, because in hindsight, it combined precisely the right elements: catchy music, visually stunning animation, global fan culture, and the vast reach of Netflix’s distribution system.
