Melissa Joan Hart Opens Up About Near-Firing from ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ Due to Maxim Shoot

Melissa Joan Hart, the star of the beloved show “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” recently shared a harrowing episode from her past. She talked about the time she almost got fired from the show that made her “Sabrina” over a Maxim magazine photoshoot.

The “Pod Meets World” podcast, hosted by Danielle Fishel, Will Friedle, and Rider Strong, had  Melissa Joan Hart as a guest. That is where she revealed one of the “worst days” of her life.

Hart was supposed to go the premiere of a movie which also starred his the then boyfriend with whom she was about to break up. Like sprinkles of seasoning on that bubbling stress, she had been up since 4 in the morning for press engagements. After arriving at the venue of the premiere, she was meant to wait an hour for Britney Spears so that they could walk the red carpet together. She didn’t want to wait, but she had to.

Once the film started, Hart was rushed to the airport for the filming of Scary Movie, then all of a sudden she got a call that said her role has been canceled. In the meantime she had also broken up with her boyfriend.

Amidst all of this, she got a call from her lawyer. Apparently she was being sued for having breached the Archie Comics contract and she was also getting fired from Sabrina. A photoshoot she had done for Maxim Magazine was at the root of this. It turns out the cover line for her shots read “Sabrina, your favorite witch without a stitch.” This violated Hart’s contract with Archie that prohibited her from playing the character nude anywhere.

Things, of course, got straightened out as it was established that Heart was not in control of what the Maxim Magazine would write on her photos’ captions. She retained the role. But as you may imagine, it was a heart pumping day for her.
