The mother of former US First Lady Michelle Obama, Marian Robinson, has died. Robinson, who first moved to the White House after her son-in-law Barack Obama won the presidential election, was a support system for the family. Popularly termed the “first grandma,” she played a very crucial role in handling the Obama family, especially her granddaughters, Malia and Sasha. Initially, she was reluctant to move to Washington, but Michelle Obama’s brother, Craig Robinson, managed to persuade her.
The statement by her family read,
With a healthy nudge, she agreed to move to the White House with Michelle and Barack. We needed her. The girls needed her. And she ended up being our rock through it all.
Michelle Obama also shared the statement in a tweet. She added,
My mom Marian Robinson was my rock, always there for whatever I needed. She was the same steady backstop for our entire family, and we are heartbroken to share she passed away today. We wanted to offer some reflections on her remarkable life: https://t.co/F7T6q625PC

The joint statement by the Obama and Robinson families stated that Marian Robinson always acknowledged the potential within every child. She would say that there are numerous Michelle and Craig in this world. However, they have now realized that there will only be one of her kind.

In a separate tweet, Barack Obama also wrote the same for his beloved mother-in-law. He added,
There was and will be only one Marian Robinson. In our sadness, we are lifted up by the extraordinary gift of her life. And we will spend the rest of ours trying to live up to her example. https://t.co/2gH0DPQYVb

The families also recalled, after her peaceful death, how she supported Barack Obama the night before presidential results were to be announced. She sat on a sofa with him holding his hands as Obama created history by becoming the nation’s first African-American president.
