Nineteen Russian drones entered Polish land, causing tension among the citizens and the officials. The drones entered Poland from Belarus while attacking Ukraine. The incident took place on Tuesday, 9 September.

Poland acted fast. Polish F-16 fighter jets scrambled to intercept the drones. NATO allies supported the mission. Dutch F-35 jets and Italian surveillance planes joined the defense. Germany put its Patriot missile systems on high alert.

19 drones were destroyed. Some were shot in the eastern part of Poland. Some debris was found in the Czosnówka and Wielki Łan. In Wyryki-Wola, one of the drones crashed into a house, destroying its roof. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called the drone strike a “large-scale provocation.” He said that he is in contact with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and other allies. He called the drone attacks ‘unacceptable.’

Poland invoked Article 4 of the NATO treaty. This means there will be a discussion between the NATO countries and Poland related to the incident and what measures need to be taken.

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski called the attack deliberate and unprecedented for a NATO ally. He said drones are “only part of the threat” and called for an “anti-drone wall” on Poland’s borders.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte condemned Russia. He called Moscow’s actions “reckless” and confirmed NATO stands with Poland.

Russia denied targeting Poland. The Russian Ministry of Defence said the drones attacked only Ukrainian military sites. Andrey Ordash, Russian chargé d’affaires to Poland, said the claims are ‘groundless.’ He added that Russia is willing to hold talks with Poland on the matter.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned the attack could destabilize Europe. He said stronger NATO and EU air defenses are needed. European Union Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius called for an EU ‘drone wall’ to block such incursions.

U.S. President Donald Trump expressed frustration. On social media, he wrote: “What’s with Russia violating Poland’s airspace with drones? Here we go!” The White House said it is closely watching the situation and supporting NATO allies.

The drone attack disrupted travel. Several airports near Poland’s eastern border temporarily shut down. Flights were rerouted or delayed. Experts say Russia used Gerbera and Shahed drones. These are kamikaze-style drones that destroy targets by crashing into them.

Military analysts believe Russia intended to test NATO’s defenses. They wanted to see how quickly and effectively the alliance could respond. Though NATO defended Poland successfully, the breach revealed security gaps. Poland has requested more air defense systems to protect its borders. This event comes before joint Russian-Belarusian military drills. It also forced Poland to close some Belarus border crossings temporarily.

Poland is asking NATO allies for help. This incident shows the problems faced by the counties near the warzone. It also highlighted the need for stronger defenses and alliance cooperation. The incident caused more tension between Ukraine and Russia.

Poland’s quick military response, backed by NATO, protected its airspace. But this is a clear warning that the conflict remains dangerous and volatile.

The Polish army on Thursday restricted air traffic till the 9th of December. With this, Poland banned all drones within 26 to 46 km of its eastern border, allowing only manned flights above 3 km, to ensure national security.

Airports will be closed in places near the border, like Warsaw Chopin, Warsaw Modlin, Rzeszów-Jasionka, and Lublin airports, and will follow strict rules for safety reasons.
