Pierce Brosnan was born on 16 May 1953 (age 70 years; as of 2023) in Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland. Brosnan, who was named after his grandfather, spent his initial childhood in Navan, County Meath. With a turbulent childhood, Pierce’s father left his family when he was an infant and his mother relocated to Paris where she worked as a nurse. Hence, Pierce grew up with his maternal grandparents.

Initially, Brosnan studied in a local school run by De La Salle Brothers, where he also served as an altar boy. Subsequently, in 1964, Brosnan went to Scotland to live with her mother and her new husband. Not long after, Pierce and her family moved to England from Scotland where he was educated at Ark Putney Academy, England. Soon after completing high school, Brosnan wanted to pursue a career in painting. Hence, he started his training in commerce illustration at Saint Martin School of Arts, London. However, later his interest shifted towards acting. Owing to this, he took a three-year acting apprenticeship at the Drama Centre London.

Parents & Siblings

Pierce Brosnan’s father, Thomas Brosnan, was a carpenter. Nevertheless, he left his family when his son was an infant. Meanwhile, his mother, Mary May Smith, initially worked as a nurse. Pierce Brosnan was the only child of his parents.

In 1964, after he relocated to unite with his mother in Longniddry, he was adopted by his mother’s new husband, William Carmichael.

After Pierce’s mother left for Paris for her job, he used to reside with his maternal grandparents, Philip and Kathleen Smith. In an interview with a media house, Brosnan talked about this and said that “childhood was fairly solitary. I never knew my father. He left when I was an infant. To be Irish Catholic in the 1950s, and have a marriage which was not there, a father who was not there. The mother and the wife suffered greatly. My mother was very courageous. She took the bold steps to leave and become a nurse in England. I want a better life for her and myself. My mother comes home once a year, twice a year.”

Wife & Children

Brosnan had married twice. Not long after leaving the drama school, he met Australian actress, Cassandra Harris. Shortly after dating, the couple tied the knot in December 1980 and had one son, Sean. Meanwhile, Brosnan also adopted Cassandra’s two children from her previous marriage, Charlotte (1971-2013) and Chris; they subsequently took his surname.

Nevertheless, following Harris’ visit to Rajasthan, she became seriously ill. She was later diagnosed with ovarian cancer and passed away on 28 December 1991.

In 1994, Pierce Brosnan met actor-turned-journalist Keely Shaye Smith in Mexico. After seven years of dating, in 2001, the couple entered into a marriage. Meanwhile, the couple has two sons, Dylan and Paris.

Pierce Brosnan follows Catholicism. In 2013, he commented, “It always helps to have a bit of prayer in your back pocket. At the end of the day, you have to have something and for me, that is God, Jesus, my Catholic upbringing, my faith… God has been good to me. My faith has been good to me in the moments of deepest suffering, doubt and fear. It is a constant, the language of prayer. I might not have gotten my sums right from the Christian Brothers or might not have gotten the greatest learning of literature from them, but I certainly got a strapping amount of faith.”

Nevertheless, in another media interaction, he stated that he likes to follow the teachings of Buddhist philosophy.

In 1975, soon after graduating from the drama centre, Brosnan began working as an acting stage manager at the York Theatre Royal. Soon after, he made his acting debut with the theatrical production Wait Until Dark. Owing to his exceptional acting, he was selected by the playwright Tennessee Williams to play the role of McCabe in the play The Red Devil Battery Sign. In 1977, he worked in the theatrical production Filumena.

Films

In 1980, Pierce Brosnan made his film debut with The Long Good Friday (1980). Subsequently, in the same year, he appeared in the film The Mirror Crack’d. Between 1986-2000, Pierce Brosnan was featured in several films including Taffin (1987), Mister Johnson (1990), Entangled (1993), Mars Attacks (1996), Dante’s Peak (1997), The Nephew (1998), and The World is not Enough (1999).

Controversies

Notice Against Brosnan by State Government of Delhi, India

In 2016, Pierce Brosnan endorsed an Indian mouth freshener brand, Pan Bahar, which is a mixture of nuts, seeds, herbs, and spices. However, the ad sparked a controversy as consuming Pan Bahr is considered hazardous to health and studies suggested that it can cause cancer.

Owing to this, the State Government of Delhi issued a notice against Brosnan demanding an explanation about his association with the illegal brand, Pan Bahar. Meanwhile, the notice also questions Ashok &Co, which owns the brand, Pan Bahar.

Nevertheless, Brosnan replied to the notice that he was “cheated by the company, as the latter did not disclose the hazardous nature of the product and other terms and conditions of the contract of advertisement.”
