Netflix has confirmed that the animated series Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles will not be returning for a third season. The series, based on Stan Sakai comics, premiered in April 2022 to much acclaim for its engrossing storytelling and fine voice acting.
The series follows the journey of a teenage rabbit with a fervent desire to become a true samurai. Alongside his warrior companions, he endeavours to protect their city from the menacing threats posed by Yokai monsters, ninjas, and evil aliens.
The initial order of 20 episodes for Samurai Rabbit was released in 2 batches. The first 10 episodes arrived on April 28th and the second batch dropped on September 1st. While the series garnered positive reviews for its compelling narrative and voice performances, some viewers expressed concerns about the animation quality.
The series was not featured in the 2023 slate of Kid’s animation titles. Gaumont Television, one of the companies involved in the production, officially confirmed that Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles has indeed “concluded” its run, leaving no room for further continuation.

The show had a 61% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 6.5 rating on IMDb. Common Sense Media also applauded its futuristic samurai story and positive message.
The show did not make it into the global top 10s but it was featured on the kid’s top 10 in various countries. The first season was in the kids’ top 10 for 19 days. Viewership might have played a role in the decision not to continue the series.
Despite its untimely end, Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles will be remembered fondly by its dedicated fanbase for bringing the world of Stan Sakai’s comics to life and delivering an enjoyable and action-packed animated adventure.
