As stated by the Elon Musk-led company on 22 October, over 2,500 Starlink devices have been blocked by SpaceX, which were being used by cyber scam syndicates operating in illegal corners of Myanmar.

Myanmar authorities recently raided the scam compound, the notorious KK Park, and dozens of Starlink receivers & multiple Starlink terminals were seized. Also Myanmar military arrested more than 2,000 people in the raid. There were hundreds of buildings where the victims were often forced to carry out romance, investment, and many other online frauds.

Vice President for Starlink business report tweeted on 22 October at 7:31 AM that, “SpaceX proactively identified and disabled over 2,500 Starlink Kits in the vicinity of suspected ‘scam centers.’

We are committed to ensuring the service remains a force for good and sustains trust worldwide: both connecting the unconnected and detecting and preventing misuse by bad actors.”

According to the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, scam compounds in border areas have significantly increased since 2021, and they are making multibillion-dollar losses worldwide.

The Tak provincial office of Thailand said that 1,049 people crossed from Myanmar into the Mae Sot district between Wednesday to Friday morning. The people who crossed will be investigated to determine whether they were victims of human trafficking or else they could be prosecuted for illegal border crossing.

The U.S. Congress has also launched an investigation to determine if quick actions were taken by SpaceX or not, to prevent these misuses of their network services. This clearly highlights the challenges in security while criminals exploit satellite internet services through independent local telecom systems.

The problem is much bigger than the internet connection; even after devices being blocked, there are hundreds of people still locked inside these scam compounds. Moreover, the criminals can access the Starlink devices via black markets and smuggle them from other countries.

All in all, SpaceX’s move in this situation is a smart and helpful one. But the root problem is human trafficking, fraudulent networks, and illegal use of the internet, which need broader regulations and global cooperation to be eradicated.
