Mohammad Alavi, former game developer at Respawn Entertainment disclosed in an interview that Titanfall 3 was in development for ten months before it got canceled. This is a crazy story because even the publishers of the earlier Titanfall games, EA didn’t know about the cancellation until six months after the project was ditched.

Titanfall is a mecha first-person shooter game set in the war stricken outer space colonies. Human foot soldiers and robots called “Pilots” fight in six versus six battles at the Frontier. The idea was quite revolutionary in a pre-PUBG world. Titanfall 2, which released in 2016, two years after the release of the first game, did not do as well as you’d expect a game of its caliber to do. The game had a disastrous release date right between the releases of EA’s Battlefield and Activision’s Call of Duty: Infinite War.

After the success of the second game, Respawn started working on a third installment. Mohammad Alavi had the story ready. Developers were toiling continuously to make the multiplayer format work better. Alavi confesses that the third game was not anything “revolutionary”, it was a decent game with incremental improvements from Titanfall 2. At this point, the epoch-making launch of PUBG took place. Alavi and his team decided to use Titanfall 3 classes to develop Apex Legends, another fighting game. The developers themselves canceled the game.

Alavi would love to have another Titanfall game to his credit, but he thinks he took the right call by dropping it. He said, “Titanfall 2, like I said, is my most crowning achievement, but it was the right call. That is a crazy cut. Such a crazy cut that EA didn’t even know about it for another six months!”
