Pop star Usher had earlier surprised his fans by getting married to his longtime-girlfriend, Jennifer Goicoechea. While speaking to ET, the eight-time Grammy award winner said that his marriage came off as a surprise to not only the fans but also to his family.
After being honored as the Entertainer of the Year at the 55th annual NAACP Image Awards, Usher took the opportunity to talk about his marriage to 40-year-old Jennifer. Although the couple was engaged, Usher said it was hard for his family to believe that they were getting married.
The singer said,
It was an incredible moment that we felt was great for us. It was a button at the end of an incredible Las Vegas run. My mother was there, her mother was there, the kids were there, our immediate family was there. Matter of fact, everybody was surprised. I’m like, ‘No, no, no, we’re having a wedding right now. We’re gonna go have Elvis officiate us.
Just a few hours after Usher concluded his performance at the Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, the couple got married.
The NAACP Image Awards held on Saturday awarded Usher with not only the Entertainment of the Year award but also the President’s Award.
This prestigious award is given to talented and special individuals for their public service. Before Usher, celebrities such as Gabrielle Union-Wade, Dwyane Wade, Rihanna, LeBron James, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter, and Muhammad Ali have been the recipients of the award.
While accepting the President’s Award, Usher did not forget to thank his support pillars. The 45-year-old singer stated,
They say behind or beside or with every strong man is a stronger woman, and for that, I thank my mother and my beautiful wife Jennifer for holding me down.
