Apple M1 Ultra Has Just Revealed Its Most Powerful Mac Chip

Apple introduced Apple M1 Ultra on Tuesday, the company’s highest-end M1 Mac CPU to date. It’s a device that combines two M1 Max CPUs into a single unit with 64 graphics cores, 20 processing cores, and 128GB of memory support. The CPU, which has a staggering 114 billion transistors, unveil at Apple’s March product launch party and powers the new Mac Studio desktop computer’s high-end $3,999 configuration.

According to Apple, the chip leverages specific circuitry from the M1 Max from last year, together with a high-speed silicon interface dubbed UltraFusion, to knot the two processors together without an intricate architecture that would cause complications for programmers. It’s typical of the semiconductor industry’s growing ambition to leverage packaging technologies to connect smaller chip parts into a single bigger processor.

Apple M1 Ultra Architecture Is A Ground-Breaking Design

The Apple M1 Ultra is built on the incredibly powerful and energy-efficient M1, Max. The die of two M1 Max is linked using UltraFusion, Apple’s custom-built packaging architecture, to create M1 Ultra. The most common method for scaling performance is to connect two CPUs through a motherboard. However, this often comes with substantial trade-offs, such as higher latency, lower bandwidth, and higher power consumption.

Apple’s UltraFusion, on the other hand, employs a silicon interposer to connect the chips over more than 10,000 signals. This results in whopping 2.5TB/s of low-latency inter-processor bandwidth – more than four times that of the top multi-chip interconnect technology. It allows the M1 Ultra to identify a single chip by software. Removing the need for developers to modify programs to make use of its speed. It’s nothing like you’ve ever seen before.

Unprecedented Power Efficiency And Performance

The Apple M1 Ultra comes with a 20-core CPU that includes 16 high-performance cores and 4 high cores. A similar power envelope gives 90 percent greater multi-threaded efficiency than the fastest current 16-core PC desktop CPU. Furthermore, the Apple M1 Ultra uses 100 fewer watts to reach the PC chip’s peak performance. This incredible efficiency implies less power is necessary, and fans run silently, even as applications like Logic Pro rip. Across demanding workloads like processing vast quantities of virtual instruments, sound plug-ins, and effects.

Conclusion

The Apple M1 Ultra represents a new high-water mark for Apple’s processor line, but it’s still a step behind the M2 processor. This project overhaul the core engines in Apple’s Mac processors. Even though Apple claims the new Mac Studio is quicker than the current Intel-powered Mac Pro, the company also stated that a new Mac Pro built on Apple silicon is still in the works.
