Is Your ESPN App not Working? Here’s How to Fix It

If you enjoy sporting events on demand, the ESPN app by ESPN Inc. is your daily companion. If your ESPN app has been dysfunctioning of late, you are not alone. Thankfully you can fix it with ease. Here’s some help.

Nearly 25 million people actively use the ESPN app to watch sporting events on demand. It’s one of the most popular streaming platforms for sports and games. The app was built by ESPN Inc. in 2018 and it has grown exponentially since then. However, there have been reports of the ESPN app not functioning correctly. So, we’ll discuss the possible reasons for the app not working and the ways you can fix it.

Why isn’t your ESPN app not working?

There are a number of possible reasons that might contribute to the malfunctioning of the app. We will go through some of those reasons and help you tackle them.

Is the internet alright?

That’s the most basic of problems, right? Thanks to the habit of staying connected to the internet 24/7, we often lose sight of the fact that the internet might sometimes falter. So, the first thing you do is check whether your phone is connected to either WiFi or has mobile data on. Also, ensure that your phone is not in Airplane mode.

If you are not sure of your mobile data balance, just try opening YouTube (of course, play something that you do not have downloaded). If the internet connection is okay and the ESPN app is still not working, you may have mobile data disabled for the app.

Go to device settings > Mobile data > Select the ESPN app > Toggle it on.

Is the app compatible with your phone?

Both Android and iOS are getting new updates regularly and the apps are changed to maintain compatibility with the operating systems. If you use an old phone or an older version of the operating system, the ESPN app might not be compatible with your phone. In such a case the app won’t work. To check compatibility go to the play store or the app store and find the ESPN app. You’ll be able to check the compatibility in the app info section.

Currently, the ESPN app is functional on iOS 14 and later and Android OS 5.0 and later.

Is the app server down?

A service outage might be responsible for your app’s failure. You can check whether an app is down by visiting sites like Downdetector.com. If the app is down, you can report the same on the ESPN support page.

You’d have to wait for the app to come back online, there is not much you can do in this case.

Is your cache too heavy?

Both your device and your browser store website data in caches to help them load faster. Data might build up in the caches over time resulting in the laggy performance of applications. On an Android device, you can clean up an application’s cache quite easily.

Go to Settings > Apps > Select ESPN > Storage > Clear cache.

This will lift some weight off the app and help it run better.

Unfortunately, you cannot clear an application’s cache on iOS. You can, however, clear your browser cache which too can cause your phone to slow down.

Go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data.

Restart or Reinstall

If none of the above seem to work, try restarting the app. If it still doesn’t work. Reinstall it. Tap and hold on to your ESPN app widget. Tap on the uninstall button when the option appears. Alternatively, go to the Play Store, find the ESPN app, and uninstall it. Then, install it – you should be able to start right where you left off since your account data is automatically backed up.
